Election 2020: Historic Victory for Joe Biden & Kamala Harris

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

President-elect Joe Biden surpasses 270 electoral votes, announced across all news broadcasting media outlets on the morning of Saturday, November 7, 2020. The 46th President of The United States of America marks a historic moment across the nation, alongside Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.

After a long awaited process filled with high emotion since Election Day on November 3, Americans awoke to the presidential results between Joe Biden and Donald Trump this morning. Cities erupt in celebration from New York to Miami and Denver and Austin. Pride, relief, and tears followed throughout the day, leading to the official announcement of victory.

Tonight, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris addressed their victory speeches at Wilmington, Delaware at 8:28pm ET. Livestreams captured their audience with masks, waving flags, honking horns, dancing, and even crying.

Today, it is imperative to recognize Kamala Harris as the first female, first Black & first South Asian, daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants, as the highest-ranking woman ever in line of presidential succession. “I stand on their shoulders. What a testament it is to Joe’s character that he had the audacity to break one of the most substantial barriers that exist in our country and select a woman as his Vice President. But while I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last,” former California Senator said.

Americans across the nation were able to witness history tonight. After a year filled with quarantine, racial injustices, and political headlines, this presidential result has given hope and reassurance to every individual of race, identity, and status.

As for President-elect Joe Biden, his first speech was delivered with gratitude, empathy, and determination. “I pledge to be a President who seeks not to divide, but to unify. Who doesn’t see Red and Blue states, but a United States,” former Vice President said.

Still with high emotions across the country, the results from the 46th Presidential Election has declared an answer for the people. Moving forward, Americans are reminded of what it means to heal the soul of our country and the endless possibilities of achievements we can reach when we all come together.
