We all want a powerful digital camera that can capture the moments. For our first-year readers, you might start to see the demand for digital cameras in college that can capture the sparkle of the moment. The rise of digital cameras provides Gen Z with a retro and vintage filter to their photos. Paul Greenwood, head of research and insight at the creative agency We Are Social, said in his BBC interview it was a “natural cycle” where when people hit their 20s to start being nostalgic. He said that “the grainy kind of content you see is basically shorthand for authenticity,” which is the core value of Gen Z.

As a college student, Paul’s statement really resonate with me. The pictures in my photo library that’s taken from my phone camera consist of many random pictures, from lecture presentation photos to screenshots of job postings to random TikTok downloads.

iPhone cameras are handy and widespread, so the pictures are all consistent across phone users. Digital cameras, on the other hand, have limited storage (usually run on a memory card), so we are more selective with what we take. The unique filter effect that’s distinctive to each camera also gives you a personal touch. When my whole friend group has each of a different camera model, we have different vibes and aesthetic pictures after a long night out.

With that said, below is a curated selection of nine digital cameras — both popular and lesser-known — ordered by price from least to most expensive. Attached are also some strangers’ Instagram “digital dump” accounts that you can browse for more pictures coming from that exact camera model. I hope you find your most suitable camera!
