When I first moved to Santa Barbara, Yelp became my best friend. I was unfamiliar with the area, and I didn’t know who to ask for recommendations. Now that I have lived here for six years, I am confident that I know the go-to spots for someone new to the area. I am the furthest thing from a tour guide, but I can guarantee you that my recommendations will not disappoint. If you just moved here, or if you’re on a little getaway, here are some of my favorite places to visit in the area!

The Funk Zone

The Funk Zone district is located within walking distance of State Street and the Santa Barbara pier. It is home to some of the most popular restaurants, boutiques, wineries, and art exhibits in town. Whether it be a local band playing at Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co., an art walk through all of the different studios, or a hard-to-beat happy hour at Seven, there aren’t many things that you can’t do in this area of town. If you are planning on checking out The Funk Zone, I would recommend going on a sunny weekend afternoon and bringing a camera because the photo-ops are endless. Prepare to get funky!

Douglass PReserve

Douglass Preserve is the perfect spot to catch the sunset (or sunrise if you’re into early mornings). This public park is located on the Mesa and overlooks the beautiful Santa Barbara coast. If you have pups, feel free to bring them as you stroll down the preserve and soak up the wildlife.

M Special Brewing Company

This may be my favorite spot in Santa Barbara and a go-to for new visitors. The back patio at the downtown location is the perfect place to unwind after a long day. There’s a beer for everyone (even for those like me who don’t love beer). To make matters even better, M. Special has a full menu of delicious options if you are looking for a bite to eat! If you’re lucky you may even come across a local band performing or have the opportunity to participate in trivia night.

Flor De Maiz

Flor is the perfect restaurant for a date night or dinner with your closest friends. This restaurant has some of the yummiest food in Santa Barbara and delicious beverages for those who are 21+. There are also vegan and vegetarian options on the menu (I recommend the cauliflower tacos, they are to die for) if you’re looking for something within your dietary restrictions. With the option to sit inside or outside on the patio, and only steps away from the beach, Flor provides an unbeatable ambiance and restaurant experience.

Sirena

Sirena is a women’s clothing boutique located at 116 E Yanonali St in the Funk Zone. Their clothing is perfect for when your beach and city vibes collide. This little boutique is one of a kind and has a little bit of everything. To make it even better, the employees are always so welcoming and really make you feel at home. I would highly recommend Sirena if you are looking for a stress-free shopping experience.

I hope my suggestions guide you through Santa Barbara with ease and leave you with a newfound love for the city. Enjoy!
