Campus Involvement: I am the External Vice President for Local Affairs (long-winded title I know!) in Associated Students and I’m also in UCSB Army ROTC.
Describe your position in AS–what is your favorite part and what is the most challenging aspect of your job? As the External Vice President for Local Affairs (EVPLA) my goal is to relay what students think and care about to local decision makers and to help connect students with their local governments. The most challenging part is combating the stereotypes many folks in the county have of UCSB students. My favorite part is when I get to see something change because of work my office did or help a constituent directly with something that concerns them. For example, recently a fellow student did some work on the Del Playa bike path connection by Manzanita and I helped him get it repaved; stuff like that is really rewarding.
What drove you to run for a position in AS? I have gotten so much from my time at UCSB, in Isla Vista, and in Santa Barbara. I wanted the opportunity to give back and leave the school and community I love better than it was when I got here.
What are a few of your goals for the school this year? I want to graduate on time and I really want to see student voices and student concerns carry more weight locally.
Who is your role model? My mother. She made a mid-career shift from a position in sales and marketing to become a high school teacher. Her commitment to her students is jaw-dropping. Students of hers have slept on our couch when they’ve been kicked out of their house. She’s paid out of pocket for college applications. I honestly just hope I can have half the passion for my job as she has for hers.
What are some of your hobbies? I have too little time and too many hobbies but some of my favorites are rock climbing, backpacking, and hiking. I love basically anything outdoors. I also love to cook and eat. It is a lot of fun to cook for friends, especially if it’s followed by great booze and a long night playing Cards Against Humanity and just hanging out.
Describe your most embarrassing moment at UCSB: Wow…which one? I have publicly humiliated myself quite a few times while I have been here. Can I just say the awkwardness of my entire first year?
What is your favorite spot on campus or in Isla Vista? I’m not sure if this counts because it is just outside of Isla Vista. If you follow Sands Beach far enough, to the edge of Sand Piper Golf Club, there’s this little strand of beach where there are some tide pools and two makeshift driftwood canopies. It’s so peaceful and a great destination for a run if you take Bluffs Overlook Trail.
What is your dream career? I’m not really sure what my dream career is. All I know right now is the top criteria, which is that I feel like I’m making a positive difference in the world. It doesn’t have to be a big difference but I don’t think I am capable of working solely for my own benefit.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? If I could live anywhere in the world, I think I’d avoid settling and change places every year or so. If I had to stay put, probably London or San Francisco, I love places where I don’t have to drive.
What were you for Halloween? Most nights I was myself while volunteering at the A.S. Hydration Station and Porta Potties in Little Acorn Park. Saturday I managed to dress up and go out with my friends. My significant other and I were Ketchup and Mustard.
What is your guilty pleasure movie or television series? New Girl, on top of having a celebrity crush on Zoe Deschanel, I just love the awkwardness.
Got any advice for new UCSB students? My advice for first years or really any student is to just try and be kind to whoever you meet. Smile, ask someone how their day is going, and actually take the time to listen to their response. If you do this you’ll end up hearing a lot of interesting stories and meeting a lot of really fascinating people.
