Our campus seems to have it all- the beach, beautiful people, and tons of fun things to do- but what about all of the wonderful things back home? Here’s a list of ways to keep in touch and feel at home while keeping your toes in the sand here at UCSB:
1. Important Dates
Whether it’s Mother’s Day or your best friend’s birthday, it’s not always possible to make it home in time to celebrate with those you love. Instead of calling or texting, send them something in the mail! Try sending a letter with a gift card for their favorite place to eat or shop. It’s more personal and will most likely catch them by surprise!
2. Little Loved Ones
Maybe your little sister would always get into your makeup or your nephew seemed to do nothing but eat and cry; it can still be hard to miss out on watching them grow up. Skype is the closest technology has gotten to creating a teleportation device, so take advantage of what we’ve got! Maybe you’ll even be lucky enough to hear them say that new word they learned from their mommy when she was mad.
3. Furbabies
Even if there aren’t any kids in your family, you may have had to leave behind your pets! Being around other cute animals is bound to cheer you up until you can get home and smother yours with love. UCSB has Dog Therapy Day every quarter and there are always people walking their dogs in IV. Plus, it can be a great way to meet a new cutie!
4. Your Bedroom
Dorms aren’t exactly the most comfortable living spaces and apartments in IV can come with noisy neighbors. Bring things from home, like a cozy blanket or cool posters, to make your room here at UCSB a more enjoyable place to be!
5. Home-Cooked Yummies
Ramen noodles can get old real quick! If you ask nicely, your family would probably love to send you a care package filled with goodies. If your favorite food shouldn’t be stuck in a box for a few days, ask your mom for some of her recipes. Nothing beats mom’s cooking, but it’s fun to try! (Just don’t burn the house down.)
