UCLA’s second name – Under Construction like Always – does not disappoint this
month, as the David Geffen School of Medicine prepares to welcome a new building to the
campus. The building, the “Teaching and Learning Center” is at the intersection of Le Conte and
Tiverton and will be a new hub for the School of Medicine. The construction is expected to be
completed in 2016.
This new addition to the UCLA family is expected to be groundbreaking in its teaching
interface as well as in its style of learning tending to collaboration and teamwork. New methods
of medical diagnoses will be integrated into the teaching system by catering to the new mobile
nature of this generation. In this way, emerging techniques of tracking diseases and patients
remotely will see a much larger role at the finished “TLC” center. Aside from the strictly
education facets of the center, there will be more scope for student organizations and student
affairs to play a bigger role and have places to meet.
At the moment the School of Medicine occupies eleven buildings on campus. Many of
these facilities may be developed and centralized into the TLC center. The current plan will set
the building at six floors with a square footage of 110,000. UCLA is already a top school in many
different disciplines, and we can only wait to see what more exciting innovations this new
addition will bring!
