The excitement for UCLA’s basketball season grows more and more with the opening of the newly renovated Pauley Pavilion, which will allow the Bruins to play on campus again! From its state of the art architecture and structure to the sheer size of it all, there is nothing about Pauley that doesn’t make you want to stand there staring in awe. So here are some fun facts about Pauley that you might not have known before!
1) Opened in 1965, Pauley Pavilion was named after UC Reagents Edwin W. Pauley who funded the project.
2) Pauley Pavilion is the home of the UCLA Men’s and Women’s Basketball and is used by the Gymnastics team and Volleyball teams, as well.
3) The first game basketball that the Bruins will be playing since the renovations is against Indiana State. The reason why Indiana was chosen is because John Wooden used to coach the team before he came to UCLA.
4) Pauley Pavilion has been the host to a series of impressive events that have taken place including (but certainly not limited to): MTV Choice Awards, presidential rally Obama, VH1 Rock Honor, Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards, and even UCLA’s Spring Sing.
5) UCLA’s longest winning streak in this venue has been noted to be 98 games. This streak began in 1971 and ended in 1976.
6) Pauley has also hosted a series of political events such as a presidential rally for President Obama’s campaign in 2008.
7) Pauley Pavilion has 10, 337 permanent seats and 2,482 bleachers.
8) Pauley reached a record number of seating when 13,478 people attended the UCLA vs Duke game in 1997.
9) The massiveness of Pauley can be appreciated by anyone that steps inside, but did you know that if the bleachers are retracted there is enough space for three basketball courts?!
