The 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games took place between Feb. 6th and 22nd. Among all of the unrest that infects this world, it seems like the world pauses to watch the same events. Billions of people tune into sports that they would normally never watch – like bobsledding and curling.

It’s a rare phenomenon where people across practically all cultures, languages, and beliefs come together to watch. The Olympics are a symbol of unity in dividing times, and they are a special way that sports provide a unique community.

Olympians are the best of the best. Selected among the most competitive athletes in their respective countries, these athletes have trained their entire lives for even a sliver of a chance for greatness. Despite the greatness of these athletes, they often showcase humbleness, friendship, and respect for their fellow athletes. Peaceful competition promotes respect between nations.

The intense performance of these athletes is paralleled by the sportsmanship they show, like hugging their opponents and helping them wear their medals. People love the Olympics because of national pride, the emotional backstories of athletes, and historic moments.

These athletes have access to huge platforms. Often, they become young children’s role models and heavily influence the public. That’s why it’s so important for these individuals to speak up on what is valuable to them. For example, Olympian Alysa Liu, an American figure skater, opened up on her experience with mental health in sports and having a healthy relationship with figure skating.

The Olympics represent social progress as well as diverse identities. The inspiration of Olympic athletes also stems from the personal stories behind the medals. Liu initially announced her retirement in 2022 at age 16, and her comeback was monumental and rare in the sport. Her mindset upon returning has been inspirational for many. Other personal stories reflect the Olympic spirit and why so many people care about the Olympics.

In a world defined by competition and conflict, the Olympic Games reflect competition and sportsmanship at its best. Resilience, representation, unity, and stories of success promote national pride but also provide encouragement to the ordinary citizens of the world.
