Take A Study Break During Midterm Season & Binge Watch These 5 Empowering TV Shows

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

Whether midterm season has you feeling down, an existential crisis has rendered you incapable of working productively or the sheer volume of your work has left you with no option but to put it aside entirely, your Netflix queue may seem particularly appealing at this time of year. Never fear! These 5 shows are so inspiring that watching TV will be as productive as studying:

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

The energy of Kimmy Schmidt is well captured in its theme song, which proclaims that “females are strong as hell.” The show’s titular character, despite spending 15 years of her life in a cult leader’s doomsday bunker, is optimistic, kindhearted and altogether competent. Her journey to self-realization parallels those of her fellow captives, as well as the everyday women she befriends along the way: each character overcomes adversity, takes back power from the men who wronged her and makes a name for herself.

Jane the Virgin

In a show carried by its female characters, there is no shortage of inspiring women. The Villanueva family, first introduced as a caring grandmother, strong-willed mom and determined daughter, is a testament to the importance of supporting other women. Within the family, each character demonstrates persistence and patience as she encounters obstacle after obstacle.

Stranger Things

A story of unlikely heroes, Stranger Things celebrates unique, unusual personalities and proves that every person has the power to fight for what they believe in. From assertive, blunt Eleven to tough, intelligent Nancy Wheeler, there is a role model for each viewer. Watching the characters apply their particular interests and skills to a joint cause is as encouraging as it is satisfying.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

While the tone of this show is decidedly gloomy, the Baudelaire children are just perfect enough to keep the episodes light and heartwarming. They do not complain, fight with one another or quit for any reason. Rather, they approach each challenge with ingenuity, teamwork and hope. Their victories serve as a reminder to treat others well and focus on goals, not obstacles.

Sex Education

There is a good chance that the opening scenes of this show will make you uncomfortable, but as you continue through the series you should realize that the generous amount of nudity and sex featured actually strengthens its underlying themes. Watching each character develop confidence and embrace their identities is inspiring, and the sex positive attitude of the show is wholly appreciated.

Sometimes, self care takes the form of a bubble bath and face masks. Other times, it looks like a day spent slumped across the couch, keeping Netflix on autoplay. Should the latter appeal to you, these five shows have you set for a day off that is so good for your mental health you can almost call them productive.
