Single on Valentine’s Day? Throw an “I Hate Valentine’s Day” Party!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

It’s that time of year again.
Heart-shaped boxes of chocolate line the shelves in every grocery store, and dozens of red roses seem to be popping out of just about everywhere. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and for many UCLA Bruinettes out there, all that translates to is Single’s Awareness Day. Instead of spending the day sulking about how maybe if you had actually talked to that cute guy a few Thursday nights ago you’d actually have a Valentine, here’s a better way to spend February 14th: throw an “I Hate Valentine’s Day” party!

Inspired in part by the workaholic Jessica Biel in last year’s comedy Valentine’s Day, throwing an “I Hate Valentine’s Day party” may be just the thing to spice up your least favorite mushy gushy holiday. Follow these 5 simple steps to turn your single’s awareness into single’s appreciation.

Step One:Round up your single ladies. The number one rule on Valentine’s Day for the single girl is: do NOT spend it alone. You’re going to need some major girl support to tackle not feeling completely alone on this lovey dovey day. So call up your single girlfriends and have them join you for the fiesta.

Step Two:Every party needs a theme! Pick a fun anti-Valentine’s theme like “Cupid is Stupid” or “Love Hurts.” Once you pick a theme, it’s time to decorate! Just be sure to stay away from pinks, frilly things and hearts. There’s room for you to be creative here, so choose a theme that best suits you and your single counterparts.

Step Three:Make some munchies. If there is anything that cheers a girl up on a downer day, it is definitely food. Be creative and try and match your theme. Broken heart-shaped cookies, blood red margaritas and lots of chocolate are always good choices!

Step Four:Reel in the entertainment. There will be no sappy, girly chick flicks allowed at this party. If horror is your thing, pick up a few spine-chilling thrillers like The Strangers or Halloween. If you’re not a “fright night” kind of girl, stick to some modern knee-slappers like Superbad or The Hangover.

Step Five:Embrace your inner tween. For game ideas, break out some of those middle-school favorites like “Truth or Dare” and “Never Have I Ever.” Don’t be afraid to get a little silly.

Step Six:Forget the men and have fun with your girls. Enough said.

Madeline Hunt is a senior at UCLA majoring in Communication Studies with a minor in Spanish. Originally from the laidback beach-town of Santa Barbara, the California native finds the fast-paced nature and eccentricity of LA extremely exciting. Once more, she decided to expand her horizons when she studied abroad this past fall in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Madeline wants to pursue a career in the entertainment industry and is considering broadcast journalism and public relations as potential options. On campus, she is currently the Public Relations & Marketing Director for the student- run organization Fashion and Student Trends and an intern at E! News. She served as an entertainment reporter on UCLA’s accredited student newspaper, The Daily Bruin, under the video division and is a current member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. During her free time, she enjoys playing tennis, exercising, going to the beach, shopping (online shopping will be the death of her!), reading Glamour and Cosmo, eating Mexican food and sushi, spending time with her friends, practicing her Spanish, and satisfying her weakness for caffeine with Starbuck’s lattes.
