It’s the time of period in the quarter again where you are finally halfway done. Everyone is almost there. However, instead of letting yourself remember that week 5 is half of week 10, UCLA and your professors won’t let you forget. Instead they take some time writing up exams and giving you an entire class period (and some will hold midterms at a designated time towards the end of the day) to just test you on what you have been learning.
Everyone knows midterms are so common and not news worthy. However, it is important to look around on how your fellow peers’ reaction and behavior when it comes to testing. Some students feel that they have everything under control while others become twitchy just thinking about their classes. The following are just few of many actions, behaviors, and reactions that students have gone or currently going through.
Studying: These are the people who will mainly score high on their midterm or at least be on the positive side of the curve. Many students have decided to lock themselves in their room and be a hermit for a week for their sake. Although a lot of time should be spent on studying, it’s okay to relax and take a breather to refresh your brain from everything it has learned.
All-nighters: Midterms have made people become insomniac. The thought is so terrifying that students spend hours into the night (if not into the following morning) just studying and working the night away, especially the day before the midterm. This is highly not recommended for your brain needs to get some rest and you will be physically tired. All-nighters don’t really bring out the best in students.
“Realization”: There are some students who feel that because they do not understand the material they have learned, they feel no reason to study. This is one of the hugest mistakes a person can make in their academic career. This has very little to do with a student’s study habits but with their lack of self-confidence. If a student feels that they don’t know the material, then it is a need to study. If a student feels that they cannot have a studying strategy then they should take responsibility for their academic and attend workshops such as office hours and tutoring.
