The Lennox Health Fair takes place every year, and is put on by the LMSA – the Latino Medical Student Association. It began in 1992 when the UCLA School of Medicine was approached with a new kind of project by the Hughes Space and Communication Company (HSCC). The HSCC partnered our school of Medicine with the Lennox school district, to start the district with a solid health education program. Now, over 10 years later, the Fall 2013 health fair was held once again on November 11th.
The Fair, as always, provides free activities, such as Dental Exams, Mammograms, Family Planning Options, HIV testing, free fruits and veggies and many more. Year one and year two medical students are assigned to take care of the patients with many of the patient intake, blood screening tests, etc. Many other organizations made an appearance at the Fair, including students groups devoted to teaching children the relationship between anatomy, health and exercise. Many volunteer translators also made an appearance to facilitate the communication with Spanish Speaking attendees.
Overall, the Health Fair was a success and always, and continues to inspire Bruins to make a real difference in this community.
