I Rewatched The Twilight Saga With My Roommates To Get Over My Winter Quarter Slump

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

Ah, winter quarter. The most dreadful time of the year. It’s cold, it’s rainy, and everything feels so damn slow. This was the first time I got to experience the infamous winter quarter and, let me tell you, it kicked my ass. Everybody warned me that winter quarter was going to suck and that the majority of my days would consist of wanting to pull my covers over my head and rot in bed. It took a lot for me to get through this quarter, but I did, and one of the things that helped me do so was the Twilight Saga.

During Week 7 of the quarter, I finally endured one of the worst feelings on Earth: getting sick in college without my mom and dad there to take care of me. I didn’t have anyone to bring me my Panera chicken noodle soup, I didn’t have anyone to make me a nice soothing cup of Peppermint tea, and I didn’t have anyone to wipe my tears away as I cried and whined about having a fever. Instead, I called my mom and dad at 7:30AM and cried about how I wanted to go home.

After rotting away in my bed all day and laying in a cesspool of my own feverish germs, I finally mustered up the strength to go on a walk. By that, I mean I had the strength to walk on over from my room to the living room couch. My roommates were over on the living room couch and told me that they were planning to watch the first Twilight movie that night. They said that winter quarter was the perfect opportunity to rewatch the saga. The weather is gloomy and gray all quarter, just as it is in Forks. Sometimes you just need to watch two brooding men fight over a girl to feel better. As miserable as that day was, that night made up for it. We ate homemade chocolate cake, turned on our LED lights, and snuggled up on the couch and watched Twilight. Maybe it was the movie or maybe it was the good company but I was already feeling better.

There is nothing quite like the Twilight series. It’s fun, ridiculous, and utterly entertaining. It has survived the test of time for a reason and there is no doubt in my mind that it will be labeled a classic cinematic masterpiece in the future. Generations after generations will come together and curl up on their couch, just as my roommates and I did, to witness one of the most epic love stories in history. From the introduction of the Cullen family in the first movie to Jacob Black’s “Bella, where the hell have you been, loca?”, the Twilight Saga delivers when it comes to being iconic. I know that many would label the series as a guilty pleasure, but I have no guilt when it comes to saying that I love the Twilight saga. I mean, where else would you find a movie that includes a vampire baseball scene set to “Supermassive Black Hole” by Muse?

My personal favorite movie from the franchise is Breaking Dawn Part One. I’ve loved it ever since I was a junior in high school. Spoiler alert, Breaking Dawn Part One is the movie where Bella and Edward finally tie the knot. After three whole movies, Bella and Edward finally get married and have one of the best weddings in all of cinema history. Alice Cullen, Edward’s sister, plans a beautiful forest wedding for the happy couple. One of the best lines in the entire franchise is also said in this movie. During Edward’s wedding speech, he tells Bella: “No measure of time with you will be long enough. But let’s start with forever.” CHILLS. This movie is for the yearners and the hopeless romantics which is why I adore it so much. With that being said, the stakes of this movie are higher than ever. Even bigger spoiler alert, Bella also gets pregnant with a half-human half-vampire child while she is still in her human form. The entirety of the film focuses on her survival and her inevitable transformation from human to vampire. If that doesn’t convince you to watch the movie, I don’t know what else will.

How do you survive the winter quarter? Find little things to be happy about, even if those little things are silly movies about vampire and werewolf feuds. Winter quarter may have you feeling stressed out and overwhelmed, and it’s important to carve out some time for self care. So put on your comfiest pajamas, get all your college friends, and watch some Twilight!
