Bebe Rexha is speaking out. The pop star called out designers on Monday for refusing to dress her for the upcoming 61st Annual Grammy Awards because her size 8 frame is “too big.”
The 29-year-old “Meant to Be” singer, who earned her first Grammy nomination in December, posted a video on Instagram about the matter. Before red carpet events, celebs often reach out to designers for custom pieces to wear down the carpet. She explained how her team reached out to multiple designers, but they rejected the opportunity to dress her because of her size.
“If a size 6/8 is too big, then I don’t know what to tell you,” she said. “I don’t want to wear your fucking dresses because that’s crazy ‘cause you’re saying that all the women in the world that are a size 8 and up are not beautiful and they cannot wear your dresses.”
She elaborated on the issue further in the post’s caption.
“If you don’t like my fashion style or my music that’s one thing. But don’t say you can’t dress someone that isn’t a runway size,” Rexha wrote. “Empower women to love their bodies instead of making girls and women feel less than by their size. We are beautiful any size! Small or large! Anddddd my size 8 ass is still going to the Grammys.”
Celebs like Tyra Banks and Demi Lovato quickly came to Rexha’s defense:
This isn’t the first time designers have refused to dress a celebrity because of her size. Ashley Graham, a Sports Illustrated model, said she completely skipped the 2016 Met Gala because she couldn’t get a designer to dress her!
Fortunately, some awesome women in Hollywood have been fighting the stigma that women must have a certain (thin) body type in order to be accepted. Rihanna, Jennifer Lawrence and Demi Lovato speak frequently on the issue. Women and their unique bodies are beautiful, and the only opinion that matters is your own. End of story.
