Ariana Grande Just Released a New Album & We’re Not Ready

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

Say what you want about Ariana Grande, but you can’t deny that 2019 is going to be her year. Set to headline at Coachella, Grande will be the youngest artist to have secured that closing act at everyone’s favorite annual music festival. Grande has since rescheduled her Sweetener album tour following the Coachella announcement.

Things haven’t been easy for Grande, however. In 2018, the “One Last Time” singer’s high-profile engagement with comedian Pete Davidson abruptly ended despite their overly cheesy instagram posts and tweets – did anyone see that coming? The pair was undoubtedly inseparable, even though some were quick to point out that Grande had moved on “too quickly” from her past long-term relationship with artist Mac Miller, who unfortunately passed away from an accidental overdose in September. Everything about Miller’s death is so tragic, and he is definitely someone to be missed and remembered forever. RIP.

Yet the grind doesn’t stop for Grande, as she has just released her fifth studio album thank u, next today. The 12 track long album comes close to Sweetener, an album she released just earlier in 2018. Some of the tracks included on the album are titled “NASA”, “break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored”, “ghostin” and more – all in her signature lowercase letters. As of today, Grande has already released the infamous “thank u, next”, along with “imagine” and most recently, “7 rings.” Grande has stated before that she has just been submerging herself into creating more music in the midst of her rough times, and right now we are about to see all of it come to fruition.

Since her release of the album cover of thank u, next, there has been talk that her album is going to be of a different vibe – away from the Ariana Grande that we’ve been used to all this while – sweet, angelic, innocent, dainty, and instead leaning towards a more gothic, vampy and nonchalant vibe. On the cover, Grande sports a black lipstick, a “thank u, next” chest tattoo and of course, her signature high ponytail… because who is she without that hair?
