Adult Crafting is So Back: Ideas for Your Next Craft Night

Bella Aboulhosn Student Contributor, University of California - Los Angeles
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter and does not reflect the views of Her Campus.

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with a DIY. I would literally make everything I possibly could from scratch with clay, ribbons, random felt and popsicle sticks. I attribute most of that to LaurDIY and Alisha Marie. Those two understood the power of a good craft, and I think that with the resurgence of 2016-core, we must bring back the art of the DIY as well. Here are a few of my favorite useful crafts and ideas for your next craft night!

Personalized Guess Who

I once received a completely personalized game of Guess Who for my birthday, and it was not only one of the most thoughtful gifts I’ve been given, but it is truly one of the most fun gifts I own. The game is riddled with hallway celebrities from high school, ex talking stages, teachers we turned into memes, inside jokes based on cartoon characters and truly terrible photos of all of my friends. It’s a great craft to make with your friends, as well as a source of entertainment for a future game night or even just a thoughtful gift for someone you love!

Personalized Jenga

Another great gift for someone, but also a great craft to do with friends that comes in handy later for a game night, or even just a movie night with the girls. Buy a pack of Jenga, pour out all the pieces, distribute them evenly amongst your friends and everyone writes a truth or dare on their block. You can also turn this into a personalized drinking game!

The Not So Bummer Summer Bucket List

I’m sure I was not the only one here who lived and died for the Judy Moody movie; I can bet you the Judy Moody girl to Her Campus writer pipeline is quite strong. I was obsessed with that movie, and the adventurous nature of a character wildly different from my rule-following, perfectionist self. Judy Moody’s Summer bucket list served as the blueprint for many action-packed Summers of my youth. This Summer, create a giant, colorful, bedazzled bucket list for you and your friends, roommates or even family. Not only is it a great reminder to go out and experience the world, but it’s an adorable piece of decor that reminds you to enjoy and embrace adventure every day. Lively spontaneity becomes increasingly difficult as we get older, and sometimes we need an anchor to our childhood sense of play and abandon. It may just look like a Summer bucket list, but it is the physical form of the youthful joy we must cling to as we get older.

Once you complete the activities, feel free to print out photos and stick them on the board!

Felt Name Flags

I made these with all of the girls that lived in my sorority house, and they were truly the most adorable addition to our doors during all of recruitment, and the entirety of the following year. Now, my flag hangs on my door at home and I love it. It really makes your space feel like a home and adds a small detail of cohesion between everyone that lives with you! You need felt, ribbon, sparkles and any other accoutrements you desire! I LOVEEEE the lace detailing on these.

Bedazzled Hair Brushes

I think these hair brushes are absolutely adorable to throw in a beach bag or sleepover bag. This also makes a great gift! If you get adorable gems and stickers that represent your friends, you can add those along with their initials for a cheap, thoughtful gift. The ribbon on the end is an adorable touch that I will definitely be putting on mine.

Key Hooks

I think this is such an adorable way to not only personalize your home right from the jump, but keep your keys organized! I love the photobooth key hook idea in this video, but even a simple stick figure drawing riddled with stickers, glitter, stars and gems in a colorful frame would be adorable! There are so many possibilities here to really make this personal.

I hope you all enjoy these DIY ideas! Happy crafting!
