7 “Old” Taylor Swift Songs That Will Give You All The Feels This Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

“Old” Taylor Swift was known for intricate song lyrics and elegant melodies, spinning romance and fairytales for her listeners. Her songs seem more like storytelling than just music, and her descriptions always make me think of cold, blustery weather. As a LA girl, cold weather is a concept we can only crave, but we can try to look elsewhere for those sweater weather feelings. For me, that usually starts with one of these 7 songs that we should jam out to in between listening to reputation on repeat.

1. “All Too Well”

“All Too Well” is pretty much an Autumn anthem. Rumored to be about ex Jake Gyllenhaal, this song paints the perfect picture of a relationship that withered out in the cold air. The song opens up with the lines “I walked through the door with you, the air was cold, but something ’bout it felt like home somehow, and I left my scarf there at your sister’s house, and you still got it in your drawer even now.” It makes us long for the winter we never have and the Jake Gyllenhaal we never got to date.

2. “Come in With the Rain”

From Swift’s debut album, “Come in With the Rain” is the perfect song to listen to when you’re waiting for your crush to text back. Even the title makes us wish that someone could sneak through our window and kiss us in the rain. The chorus of the song starts with “I’ll leave my window open ‘cause I’m too tired tonight to call your name. Just know I’m right here hoping that you’ll come in with the rain.” Taylor’s forte is being dramatic and romantic, and we are loving it.

3. “Back to December”

“Back to December” is definitely one of Taylor Swift’s best written songs. It is looking back on a relationship that happened in winter and started out being in this perfect snow globe world but ends in a blizzard. With lyrics like “And then the cold came, the dark days when fear crept into my mind. You gave me all your love, and all I gave you was goodbye,” she has us wanting to curl up with a blanket in bed all winter long.

4. “The Best Day”

Call your mom right after reading this and make a plan for a winter day of fun! This is the sweetest song because Taylor was inspired by her mom to write it! The song starts with “It’s getting cold, I’ve got my big coat on” and goes on to describe leaves changing, pumpkin patches, and tractor rides. You’ll be craving a day filled with winter activities after listening to this one!

5. “Sparks Fly”

If this song doesn’t make you want a cute, fun cuddle buddy in the winter months, then I don’t know what will. The lyrics “drop everything now, meet me in the pouring rain. Kiss me on the sidewalk, take away the pain” have almost every girl wishing their crush would do the same.

6. “Fearless”

Taylor has the power to romanticize something as simple as wet concrete. “Fearless” starts with “there’s something ‘bout the way the street looks when it’s just rained, there’s a glow off the pavement” and goes on to say, “and I don’t know why but with you, I’d dance in a storm in my best dress, fearless.” Don’t be afraid to jump into a loving relationship this winter—you never know when you might meet someone special!

7. “Clean”

“Clean” is easily one of Taylor’s most emotional songs. It is filled with metaphors and beautiful imagery of someone washing away all of their worries, but its deeper meaning is about being reborn. The opening line: “The drought was the very worst, when the flowers that we’d grown together died of thirst. It was months and months of back and forth” may break your heart, but remember that there is always sunshine on the other side. If you’ve had a heartbreak this winter, just know that even if “rain came pouring down, when I was drowning, that’s when I could finally breathe. By morning, gone was any trace of you. I think I am finally clean.”
