5 Ways to Avoid Procrastination

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

With finals just around the corner, it is easy to get distracted and put off studies. Here are some ways to stay focused and ace those exams!

1. Change study environments

Take your studies to a public place where there are other people studying, such as a coffee shop or somewhere outside. If you get to a point where you are not able to concentrate, relocating to another area may do the trick. The short walk to another place can serve as your study break and chance to get some fresh air.

2. Keep healthy snacks nearby

There’s nothing more distracting than an empty stomach, and taking care of your body while studying is very important. Prepare in advance easy and simple snacks such as hummus and veggie sticks, apples and peanut butter, frozen grapes, or almonds to help you power through your studies.

3. Make a to-do list

Setting clear goals on paper may motivate you to achieve them. Many times the overwhelming amount of homework can stress and lead to procrastination. Writing down weekly goals and deadlines is an organized way to visually see what needs to be done and checking things off a list is very satisfying. Another way is to use sticky notes with assignments due for reminders.

4. Study with a group

Surrounding yourself with people from your class is more stimulating than studying by yourself because you get to exchange ideas out loud and teach each other concepts, which in turn helps you learn better. Make sure to prepare yourself with the material before you meet up with your study group so you do not slow down the studying pace.

5. Make a playlist

Choose songs that do not have words because you may end up getting distracted and signing along. Use instrumental songs like classic Mozart or jazz, which is both calming and stimulating to the brain.
