5 Unique Costume Ideas Taken From Cartoons For Halloweekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

Halloween is right around the corner, and you know what that means – time for costume shopping! Choosing an outfit for this night of tricks and treats can be quite overwhelming because there are so many options and you don’t want to wear the same old boring outfit from last year. That’s why I’m here to help you navigate the daunting sea of spooky possibilities so you don’t get lost in the last-minute labyrinths of Target, Party City and Walmart.

Here are my top 5 costume ideas for Halloweekend:

Marceline the Vampire Queen from Adventure Time

We can all agree that vampires are a classic go-to costume idea that will probably never fade away. But, it can get boring sometimes to see the same looks year after year. That’s why you can spice things up by dressing up as Marceline. She is not only a vampire, but a vampire queen. She literally invented edgy fashion (in cartoons at least) and loves to rock out on her axe-shaped bass guitar. You can’t get any cooler than that!

Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time

You all probably wanted to be a mad scientist for Halloween at some point in your childhood, but have you ever considered being a pink mad scientist made completely out of sugar? No? Well, here’s your chance! Princess Bubblegum is a scientist with an impeccable sense of fashion (an entire wardrobe consisting of practically pink everything) and an eye for the morally ambiguous. She created her own kingdom and gave life to her sugar subjects herself. Although her actions can be questionable at times, she is one boss female who you don’t want to mess with. You can wear anything pink and add her signature crown to finish off the look. If you want to be even more extra, you can buy body paint and make your exposed skin pink too.

Star from Star vs. the Forces of Evil

Ever thought about being a demon-slayer and a fairy princess at the same time? Well, now you can! Star is arguably the cutest and most powerful character in the series. She is the heir to her family’s throne and spends her days on earth battling monsters and demons from across the multiverse with the help of her magic wand and spellcasting abilities. You could dress up as this adorable firecracker for a night and see what it’s like to be a powerful magic princess living among mere mortals. Just grab a devil horns headband, light blue dress, purple boots and a wand and you’re all set!

A Gem from Steven Universe

This one might be less common, but I feel like it would make such a cute costume. This show is filled with so many beautiful characters that you can’t go wrong with anyone. Just pick your favorite gem (mine is Lapis Lazuli) and basically dress up in their selective color from head to toe. You can then add their specific accents like the gem (its location on your body will vary according to which gem you pick), magic weapon of choice and overall clothing style. This will definitely make you stand out and possibly even be an interesting conversation starter.

Wirt and Greg from Over The Garden Wall

If you and your sibling (or bestie) want to do a cute pair costume, you need to check out Wirt and Greg from Over The Garden Wall. These two stepbrothers are the cutest cartoon duo out there! They go through a lot during the course of the show, but end up strengthening their brotherly bond by the end. These outfits will for sure make you the center of attention for their quirky and eccentric styles. Wirt ventures into the Unknown in a cape and red dunce cap, while Greg parades around with a frog in hand and a teapot on his head. They make an odd pair, but adorable nonetheless.

Picking an outfit for Halloween can be intimidating and stressful (especially if you want to be original/unique), but hopefully this gives you a fresh outlook on costumes.
