5 Reasons Why Winter Quarter At UCLA Is The Best: A Lot To Look Forward To

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

I’ve heard it all week. “Winter Quarter’s the worst! It’s dark outside all the time and why were there flash floods on the first days of school?” And look. I get it. Winter Quarter can seem like a bit of a drag; we’ve been on the grind for so long but are nowhere close to the finish line. But for some reason, Winter Quarter is my quarter. I always get myself together around January and find myself thriving by March. Let me give you some reasons why it should be your quarter, too.

A Fresh Start

With Winter Quarter comes a whole new year. Have your resolutions flopped already? Have no fear! It’s still early in the quarter and never too late to shift your mindset to make this your best year yet. What kind of person do you want to be at the end of the quarter? If you can stick out some positive changes till March, then they’ll be habits by the end of the quarter. And if you can build those habits, then 2023’s looking pretty great!

Longer Days = More Slays

As we move farther from December, the days get longer and longer. Seasonal depression? We won’t know her by March! It’s a slow path to spring, sure (maybe pop a Vitamin D until then), but isn’t it wonderful that in Winter Quarter, each day is better than the last?

‘Winter’ and ‘Cozy’ are synonymous

I know it’s not snowing here in LA, so it’s easy to forget that it’s even winter time. But I’m from Canada, so certain winter habits are ingrained in me at this point. Mainly, being cozy. You can catch me with my tea, blankets and candles every night of the week. That’s what wintertime is all about. In fact, to not be cozy is kind of sacrilegious.

Taylor Swift will (Probably) drop new music

Okay, I’m not one hundred percent sure about this one; I’m just manifesting it. But a girl can dream! Go on Twitter and read those conspiracy theories… some of them are super believable. I am convinced that Speak Now TV will be with us sooner than we think. As a Swiftie, that will define my quarter. On the rare, I-don’t-even-want-to-say-this, chance that we don’t get more music, at least we’ll have Galentine’s day! Where I very much plan on listening to her entire discography with my girlfriends anyways.

It Will Fly By

And lastly, for those of you who aren’t convinced and insist on despising Winter Quarter, at least it flies by. I find Fall Quarter to drag as I get back into the swing of school, and spring feels like forever because I’ve been in school so long at that point. But winter? It flies right by. All of a sudden, it’s week two, and then seven and then I’m doing the undie run but my mind still thinks it’s January. Before you know it, you’ll be on spring break.

So don’t hate on Winter Quarter. Really milk it for all the fun and growth you can. Because before you know it, we’ll be onto spring!
