If you’re like me and are absolutely obsessed with mystery movies, you would know that the struggle of finding new movies to watch is so real. I don’t know why, but nothing beats feeling scared out of your mind and sitting on the edge of your seat while watching a mystery film. So, here are 5 of my favourite modern mystery movies for you to check out if you just can’t get enough of them:

“Knives Out”

This 2019 murder mystery movie includes everything you would possibly want in a thriller: an entertaining cast, LOL moments and so many plot twists! The plot centers on wealthy Harlen Thrombey’s family, who all become suspects when Harlen is found murdered in the morning. The lead detective of the case uncovers deep family secrets and strained relationships that will keep you on edge throughout the whole movie. It honestly seems like everyone is guilty! If you’re looking for the perfect murder mystery movie to keep you guessing until the very end, definitely watch Knives Out.

“Murder On The Orient Express”

Murder On The Orient Express is a modern-remake of the classic murdery mystery novels by Agatha Christie. Christie is the queen of mystery novels, and her early 20th century timeless classics are still an amazing read today. She has written 66 detective novels in total, and I highly recommend checking them out. However, if you prefer movies, watch this 21st century adaptation of one of her most popular detective novels (and my personal favorite). The movie follows renowned detective Hercule Poirot, as he attempts to solve the murder of a man, Ratchett, during an overnight train. My favorite part of this movie is how the aesthetics and atmosphere of the train are very representative of the times.

“Parasite”

Another favorite is Parasite, a South Korean thriller that has received extreme praise and awards in the industry (and for good reason)! This brilliant thriller follows the lives of the financially struggling Kim family and the wealthy Park family. When all of the Kims start working for the Parks, they develop a parasitic relationship with the family, which leads to spiraling trouble. The movie also won four Academy Awards and had three Golden Globe nominations. Many critics rated it as one of the best films of the decade, and Metacritic even ranked it #46 on its list of the best movies of all time. Definitely check this movie out!

“Us”

I highly recommend this movie, as it is my all time favorite thriller. Directed by the talented Jordan Peele, Us is a psychological thriller horror that will definitely give you the creeps (but in the best way possible). Seriously, the ending was so unbelievably creepy and shocking it gave me goosebumps. The plot follows a family of four as they vacation at a beach house during the holidays. Shortly after getting there, bad things start to happen and Adelaide, the mother of the family, is confronted by her worst fears as her family is under attack. If you’re going to watch this movie, don’t watch it alone or at night!

“Murder Mystery”

Lastly, no murdery mystery movie list would be complete without this Netflix film! Starring the hilarious Jennifer Anniston and Adam Sandler, Murder Mystery combines the perfect amounts of mystery and comedy to produce a lighthearted yet still super interesting film. The story follows a couple, Nick and Audrey, who get stuck in the middle of a murder investigation during their vacation in Europe. Check out this movie if you’re looking for a little bit of a thrill but also a lot of laughs and good times.

Next time you’re scrolling mindlessly on Netflix trying to pick a new movie to watch, I highly recommend checking out these 5 movies. So grab some cozy blankets, your favorite movie night snacks and prepare to get scared!
