Zach Cabrera: Mr.UCF 2012

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

The Mr.UCF scholarship pageant is an entertaining night of UCF’s studliest guys competing in swimwear, talent, evening wear and on-stage questions. Zach Cabrera has never been one to shy away from competition. His talent and charm led him to the honor of being crowned 2012’s Mr.UCF. Not only does Mr.UCF get the title of UCF royalty, but he also does a ton to give back to our community. Let’s get to know the man behind the sash in this week’s campus celebrity!

Q: First things first. What year are you? Age? Hometown? Major/Minor?
A: Senior. 22. Lakeland. Marketing with a minor in Mass Communication.

Q: What’re you involved with on campus?
A: My main involvement other than Mr. UCF is that I’m an active brother of Sigma Pi Fraternity.

Q: What was it like going through the Mr.UCF process?
A: It was fun! Surprising as it may seem, I didn’t have much experience in the whole pageant scene, so I didn’t really know what to expect, but once we started I really enjoyed the process.

Q: Tell us a little about your duties as Mr.UCF.
A: As Mr. UCF, I make appearances promoting, hosting, and/or performing at various events and philanthropies on campus or in the surrounding Orlando community.

Q: What’s been your favorite experience as Mr.UCF?
A: Probably making pancakes for customers on IHOP national pancake day. I’m REALLY GOOD at making deformed, slightly burnt pancakes. Seriously, I’m like the best.

Q: What made you want to become involved?
A: The reason I got involved with Mr.UCF was because I was encouraged to audition by some of my fraternity brothers. I saw an opportunity to give back to the school that’s given me so much these past 4 years. I knew if I won, I’d have the opportunity to represent the school in the best way I possibly could, and that was something I was really looking forward to.

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: In my free time I typically enjoy playing sports, working out, and playing guitar. Oh and trying to be funny on Twitter. That’s a big part of my life.

Q: Tell us a fun fact or something we might not know about you.
A: I was in a rap group once… Put out a mixtape. It was great. That’s a joke. It was terrible.

Q: When did you start playing music?
A: I started playing my junior year of high school but didn’t start writing my own songs until my sophomore year of college. There’s nothing more calming than being able to transpose my thoughts into song.

Q: If your house caught on fire, what three things would you take?
A: I’d take my phone, my guitar, and my pillow. If I’m gonna be homeless, I’m gonna be comfortable.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?
A: Dubai. Any place with islands shaped like palm trees has got to be legit, right?

Q: What are your plans after graduation?
A: I’d like to get a job in the sales department of a progressive firm in the Orlando area.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A: Hopefully, climbing to the top of the corporate ladder. It’s a metaphor, but it’ll actually happen. Hopefully, married to a mega babe. Have a couple champions for kids. That’s pretty much what I’m aiming for.
