Why Spring Break is Hard for Me

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

Hi, my name is Darin and I am an ambivert.  To be an ambivert is to be mildly misunderstood. A lot of people have never heard of the term, although it’s been around for awhile, and others don’t quite know what it means. Even as I wrote this article, Microsoft Word is asking me if I mean “ambient.” Ambiverts are basically people who possess traits of both an extrovert and an introvert. Ambiverts enjoy spending time with others, but also enjoy quality time with themselves. It occurs on a scale, like most other things in life, and no two ambiverts are exactly the same. It can be kind of frustrating to be an ambivert, considering how much our society likes to label people as one thing or another. Spring Break is no different, because of the many expectations that come with it.

For starters, everyone’s trying to make plans for Spring Break. Some people plan vacations with friends, while others just go home for some down time. Ambiverts kind of want to do both, which can be challenging with only one week to do so. Even if we do manage to make plans, sometimes we don’t keep them – it really depends on our mood. I can’t be the only one who made plans while I was feeling particularly extroverted, and then backed out because I wanted some me-time.

Spring Break can also be hard when you can’t stand being in the house nor being out for too long. I personally can’t stand spending the week in the house re-binging on the same Netflix series, but I also don’t like going out every. Single. Day. Because that can get exhausting. It’s a struggle trying to decide when to stay in and when to go out, because we need ambiverts need a balance of both, and trying to find that happy medium can be frustrating.

Overall, Spring Break can be hard to do as an ambivert, because it’s expected that you either go out and enjoy yourself, or stay in and relax. Ambiverts tend to want to do both, but then again, we’re still misunderstood as a personality trait, aren’t we?
