Why I Hate Black Friday: As Told by The Cast of Friends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

Calm down Janice, I hate Black Friday?! I know, it sounds crazy, but the holiday season is supposed to be about spending time with people you love. Instead, it’s over-shadowed by crazy shoppers who can’t wait to trample each other for cheap sales and the last flat screen TV in stock.

As the years progress, my social media feed becomes more and more filled with excitement for Black Friday and Christmas, but less hyped for Thanksgiving—which duhh—comes before both! So to the people who just want to skip turkey day so they can get killer deals, let me tell you why I can’t stand Black Friday. Actually, I’ll let the cast of “Friends” tell you, because any fans of the show know just how much they love Thanksgiving.

Why would I want to go to the store at such weird hours? Sleep sounds better, especially after being *stuffed* from dinner.

Yep. So much better.

The retail stores are exceptionally messy, unorganized, and crowded it literally gives me anxiety and I get too overwhelmed.

My inner Monica comes out.

Plus, being surrounded by hardcore bargain hunters who will literally kill me for a Forever 21 shirt just doesn’t sound like my cup of tea.

I’d have to get all Pheobe Buffay on them. No one wants that.

I can’t stand how stores are now opening on actual Thanksgiving Day to start Black Friday off early…

“Best Buy on Tuesday announced that it will join Toys R Us and J.C. Penney by opening at 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. That’s one hour earlier than Target, Sears, Kohl’s and Macy’s, which will all open at 6 p.m. Thursday. Those four stores opened at 8 p.m. last year.” What happened to appreciating Thanksgiving Day?

Because seriously, there’s an entire month to shop for holiday gifts.

So calm down with your absurd shopping desires.

The sale prices are usually “while supplies last” (which is usually only 2 items.)

Soooo…it’s pretty pointless.

People legitimately get hurt in the crowds and surrounding areas on Black Friday. (Over sales???)

No thanks. But if you go, stay safe!

Cyber Monday is better because you don’t have to deal with people!

Because who wants to???

So while you’re out shopping, I’ll be eating leftovers…

Happy Holidays, collegiates!
