Is it just me or do magazines like Cosmopolitan and Seventeen have articles mainly targeted toward couples?  Most articles are titled, “Do this with your Man” or “Have Fun with Your Guy.”  Single women skip the article completely, or read it and wonder why they’re single, and then wish they hadn’t read it at all.  With Valentine’s Day coming up, it seems like couples are the only people that matter.  There are really never any suggestions to what single women should do for Valentine’s Day.  For some of us, this may be our first Valentine’s Day single and for others they may be professionals at being alone on this holiday.  I am not sure which is better, but none of us should feel bad about ourselves or allow ourselves to feel alone.

I have heard two great ideas single women should do on Valentine’s Day.  The first is to watch Romantic Comedies with a group of your girlfriends, like Valentine’s Day or throw an “I Hate Valentine’s Day Party.”  The only flaw in both of those ideas is after watching Valentine’s Day, you see the beautiful Jessica Biel throw that exact same themed party, to which nobody shows up to at first, and then finally the handsome Jamie Foxx does just in time to kiss her before midnight and be her valentine.  Two words – yeah, right.  Ladies, if you’re single, you’re single, so embrace it.  You have years on top of years to be married and hopefully stay married and faithful to the lucky man, so why not be single and have multiple suitors until then?  Here are some suggestions on what to do on February 14.

1.  Pamper yourself.
Go out and get a mani and a pedi at Riana’s Nail Salon right near campus.  Get a fun, different color like mint green or neon orange, not pink or red.  Get your eyebrows done, get a bikini wax, or get your hair done.  Want to save money?  Invite your single girls over to paint each other nails and dye your hair with a box from a local drug store.  Just try to pamper yourself in some way because you’re beautiful, you deserve it and doing these things will help you feel even more so.

2.  Hit the gym.
At least five minutes of exercise every day is said to improve your mood.  So start your day off by feeling good about yourself.  This way, you won’t feel so guilty about eating sweets like cookies, cake, and chocolate later.  Also, treat yourself to the best kind of candy there is – eye candy.

3.  Allow yourself to eat some chocolate.
Don’t drown your sorrows in a whole box of chocolates or an entire bag of the fun size Milky Way’s.  I know Spring Break is coming up and some diets are in full effect, but depriving yourself of one taste will only make you binge later and then regret it.  So split a dessert with your girlfriends or share the box of chocolates.

4.  Go out for drinks.

Make sure the girls you go with are all single.  If one girl is talking about her boyfriend and their plans, the rest of you will want to reenact the scene from Mean Girls when Lindsay Lohan jumps across the lunchroom table to attack Rachel McAdams.  Wear something cute, sexy, and flirty, to help boost your confidence and laugh when the eyes of other girls’ dates wander to check you and your friends out.  It’s Sex and the City that taught us that our girlfriends are our soul mates and boys are just people we have fun with.  So why not spend Valentine’s Day with your real soul mates?

5.  Watch a movie.
It’s up to you and your friends what genre you want to watch.  It could be a Romantic Comedy, like No Strings Attached, or a thriller like, Shutter Island.  You could even go a few years back and watch a completely ridiculous, yet hilarious movie, like Anchorman:  The Legend of Ron Burgandy.  If you can’t decide on just one, then watch them all.  As long as you have your girls by your side, Valentine’s Day will just feel like any other day.
