Between classes, internships, clubs, and every other aspect of our lives that seems magnetized to the University of Central Florida’s campus, sometimes you need somewhere to exist that is not located on Central Florida Blvd. That is where the term “third place” comes in. If you are looking for a new “third place” this semester, these three spots are worth losing your parking spot for.
For those who aren’t already aware, a third place is a space outside of home, work, or school where people can gather, socialize, and spend time in their community. Typically, third places are free to enter, which is why college students everywhere seek them out. They are places where you can stay for a while without having to rush off to class, work, or whatever responsibility is waiting for you next.
- AUSTIN’S COFFEE

Austin’s is the kind of coffee shop where there is almost always something going on.
The Winter Park staple is open 24 hours and has a different event nearly every night, from poetry and comedy open mics to live music and Thursday jazz nights. With so much happening throughout the week, you can show up for a specific event or just stop by and see what is going on.
It is a particularly great pick if you want somewhere to study, hang out, or meet someone new!

Bynx is unique because it is part coffee shop, part record store, and part creative hangout.
Bynx feels almost as if it was built to be a third place. Along with coffee and food, the downtown Orlando spot has books, vinyl records, live music, open mics, and so many other community events. It is somewhere you can spend a few hours being present in the moment instead of just grabbing a drink and moving on to the next thing you have to do. There is always something to browse, listen to, or take part in, which makes hanging around feel like part of the experience rather than something you have to justify.

For something less coffee-shop-centered, you need to check out Blue Bamboo.
While its Groove Café gives visitors a place to grab a drink, browse records, or play chess before a show, the Winter Park-located nonprofit is best known for hosting jazz and comedy events. It offers patrons something a little different from the typical coffee shop while still providing the same sense of community that makes a good third place work.
The Arts Center’s free Thursday Night Hang is especially worth the trip: the night starts with a jazz set, then opens into a jam session for local musicians to hop in. Whether you want to play or are maybe better off listening, it’s a pretty cool thing to experience.

These spots may take a little more effort than walking across campus, but that is the whole point. A good third place gives you somewhere to become a regular, explore new areas, and build a life outside of class. So, give it a shot! You might even find a new favorite spot.
