The world isn’t perfect, especially for women. We live in a world where women are paid less than their male counterparts, looks dictate how we’re treated and on top of all that we’re constantly in fear of being attacked. It’s tough, but at least these tips can help women feel safe.

carry self-defense items

Purchase a self-defense item. Whether it’s a taser, pepper spray or even a small alarm, these items can keep you safe. Once you get it, make sure you know how to handle the item and look over the instructions. However, depending on the state, some of these items are illegal. Make sure the items are non-lethal but enough to subdue your attacker so you can get away to safety.

be aware of your surroundings

When going through your day-to-day life it’s easy to fall into a routine. While going about your day, keep an eye out for anything that may seem off. The best thing you can do is follow your instincts. Make sure you stay focused and even switch up your routine to keep anyone from knowing your schedule or route.

Lock your doors

The moment you get into your car or arrive home — lock your doors. It’s such an easy thing to forget but it makes all the difference from someone getting into your home or car.

Strength in numbers

If you’re going out for the night with friends, make sure no one is left behind. There is such a thing as “safety in numbers.” In studies, it’s been found that women who stay in large groups are less likely to get attacked. In many situations, it’s easier for an attacker to overpower a single woman — going out in large numbers and even in pairs drops those chances dramatically.

Educate people to do better

At the end of the day, we need to educate others to do better. It’s about seeing women as equals, rather than easy prey. The best thing we can do as a society is hold those who harm women accountable for their actions and teach future generations the importance of consent and making women feel safe in public.
