The majority of people may say that their parents getting a divorce is one of the worse things that could happen. For me it is the complete opposite, my parents got divorced when I was very young so I have grown up with just my mom. I never feel like I am missing a part of my life, because there are some great perks to having a single mom.

1. She is my best and closest friend.

Your mom might be your best friend regardless if she is single or not, but as a single mom that means we get to spend a whole lot of time together. We are two peas in a pod, and maybe that is just because half of our DNA is the same but we hang out together as if we were the same age. In the mornings, I usually come disturb her slumber so that we can plan out our days and go on social media while we linger in bed for another hour. From these conversations we decide what we are going to do on the weekends together, such as shopping, getting some donuts, and maybe taking some cute pictures somewhere so we can have that perfect Sunday selfie to share on Facebook and Instagram. You can find us any Friday night of the year watching a romantic comedy and eating a dessert.

2. She is my shoulder to cry on.

I tell my mom absolutely everything, there is nothing I feel afraid to hide form her because as mentioned before, she is my best friend. Life can be filled with disappointments, setbacks, and failures and the road can get tough. When I am going through a tough time, I go to my mom immediately for a really good cry regardless of where I am. She always knows exactly what to say to get you to put those tears away and move on, and after a good cry she typically offers to get ice cream; since ice cream is the best cure to any broken heart.

3. I have lots of fun picking out potential boyfriends for her.

My mom is a real life Wonder Women, and she is so gorgeous so she only deserves the finest specimen of man. Some potential boyfriends that I have thought of include Patrick Dempsey, George Clooney, Latin American singer Chayenne, and Leonardo Dicaprio. I have tried finding ways to reach out them, but it has not gone very well. We have to unfortunately set our standards lower, so we Facebook stalk some other guys who she knows who are on the market, but I have yet to find any man who is worthy to be with my mom.

4. I have learned to be an independent and strong woman because of her.

She is the toughest woman, I know. She had come from Peru as a young adult, made a living for herself, got married, had kids, got divorced and raised us all on her own. She has overcome every obstacle thrown at her, such as being from an immigrant, being a woman, and having to raise us all on her own. She has showed me that anything is possible on your own, and that it is okay to be dancing by yourself. I have learned to never rely on someone else for happiness, that despite there being dark times, I always know how to keep my head up high through them. I saw that if my mom could raise three kids all on her own, with no support what so ever, that I could do anything I put my mind to. I would like to thank her for making me the strong young woman I am today because of her.

Not just my mom, but to all of you who may have single moms, take time to appreciate all that they do for you. They deserve the biggest trophy.

Thanks mom for being the Lorleai to my Rory Gilmore (even though we are way cuter than them).
