Orlando Staycation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

Spring break. A time for college students to go wild, get drunk and black out on the beach. Right? This is the image most people have of the week long vacation. Surprisingly though, not every Collegiette has to be drunk on a beach to have a good time. There are many students who won’t even be leaving campus for spring break! For those guys and galls, I have created a guide to enjoying spring break close to home.

7. Picnic at the park:

Going to the park is not only affordable, but enjoyable as well. Us Knights are fortunate enough to have a really beautiful park minutes away from campus as well! Blanchard Park, off of Dean Road is the perfect little get away for any college student looking for a mini-adventure. So, if you’re stuck in Orlando for break, pack a lunch for you and some friends or a special someone and enjoy nature.

6. Lake Claire:

Okay, so you read #7, and you’re like, “But, Matt, I live on campus and I don’t have a car.” Well, my lovely reader, don’t worry. UCF has a beautiful outdoor attraction of its own, Lake Claire. If you live on campus, it’s within walking distance, and with its volleyball nets, open lake and nature trails, you’re bound to have some fun! Also, Lake Claire will be open the week of spring break from noon to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends for kayak and canoe rentals.

5. Thrift it Up:

Have you been telling yourself you’re totally going thrifting after you heard Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop?” Well, now’s your chance! Orlando has plenty of great thrift shops, so go treasure hunting! If you need some help finding the right place to go for your style, check out our Orlando vintage shopping guide.

4. DIY Day:

Hello, when wouldn’t this be a good idea? I’m sure, you, like most Collegiettes have a million things pinned on Pinterest that you still haven’t gotten around to creating. If you need some inspiration, HCUCF has a fabulous Pinterest. Or, if you want to try some fashion-forward DIY projects, check out Iconic at UCF’s Facebook page for some fun and stylish ideas.

3. Mardi Gras:

Universal’s Mardi Gras is a huge event, and if you’ve never been, you should check it out. From the infamous parade, to an impressive concert line-up, Mardi Gras is a good time.

2. Disney World:

Lucky for us UCF Collegiettes, the “Happiest Place on Earth,” is just a short drive away off of I-4. Day trips to Disney World are the best, and living so close, there’s no excuse! Go enjoy yourself, take pictures with your favorite Disney characters and pretend you’re a kid again.

1. Let’s Go To The Beach!

Each, let’s go get away…

No, but for real. The good thing about living in Florida is that we are literally surrounded by beaches. Daytona, Cocoa and New Smyrna beach are all pretty close and if you and your friends are up for a mini-road trip, it would definitely be worth your while.

Just because you’re not staying in a hotel on the beach or going on a wild cruise for spring break doesn’t mean you can’t make this an enjoyable vacation. So, go out and find something fun to do and enjoy your weeklong break from reality.
