An Ode to Galentine’s Day: 8 of Pop Culture’s Best Friendships

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

Even though Galentine’s Day is over, that doesn’t mean that we should stop appreciating the importance of having good friendships in our lives. So here are a few friendships that deserve some recognition!

Leslie & Ann – “Parks and Rec”

The queens of Galentine’s Day themselves. With Leslie’s everchanging and unique nicknames for Ann, and Ann’s ability to put up with all of Leslie’s quirks, it’s hard not to love this pair’s dynamic.

Eleven & Max – “Stranger Things”

After a bumpy start in the second season, some were worried that these two wouldn’t get along and would fulfill the stereotype that girls in a big group aren’t able to get along. Luckily, the third season proved this wrong and showed these two ’80s girls living a normal life. They went all out with a shopping montage, ice cream, telepathic spying and girls supporting girls with “I dump your ass.” It was everything fans could’ve hoped for and more.

Cher & Dionne – “Clueless”

Although they’re not the most down-to-earth pair, it’s hard to deny their compatibility. Friends that keep you in check when you commit a heinous fashion error, but also support you in your mission of self-growth are necessary.

Jackie & Donna – “That ’70s Show”

In a group full of boys, these girls couldn’t have been any more different. With tomboy-ish Donna and the self-proclaimed-brat Jackie, you wouldn’t expect them to get along. But navigating life in the ‘70s taught these girls about feminism, boys, life and how to help one another.

Lorelai & Rory – “Gilmore Girls”

To the girls whose best friend is their mom — you are seen.  Everyone needs a caffeine companion they can drink their weight in coffee with, and this mother-daughter duo is one that’s hard not to love.

Donna & the Dynamos – “Mamma Mia!”

If your girl gang doesn’t support your dreams to travel the world after college and then visit you when you’re all in your forties (and put on a show you did as twenty-year-olds), are you sure they’re your lifelong ride-or-dies? Oh! And they never question who your baby daddy is and respect your privacy? Keepers.

Steve & Robin – “Stranger Things”

Yes, Steve isn’t a gal and no, I really don’t care. Steve and Robin went from bickering co-workers to survivors of a Russian spy plot (which really solidified them as best friends in my mind). And when Robin came out to Steve, instead of trying to convince her to date him (or being a jerk because…well, the ‘80s) he started talking with her about girls! Get you a friend like Steve!

Rachel, Monica & Phoebe – “Friends”

I’d be a sham if I didn’t include THE girl group. The girls who defined friendship for 25 years. If you can’t watch TV with a bottle of wine in wedding dresses (when none of you are getting married), are you even really friends? The girls stuck by each other through relationships, break-ups, pregnancies, surrogacy and infertility — basically through it all.  It may not have been their day, week, month or even their year — but they were there for each other.

These relationships are just a few that emulate what it means to have someone that has your back and only wants the best for you.  And even though our favorite duos or trios may get themselves into trickier situations than most do in real life, their underlying loyalty and love for each other still stands as a testament to the importance of friendship.
