Not Only Mercury Goes Retrograde: Venus Retrograde Explained

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

Every couple of months we hear about how Mercury is in retrograde and our lives are going to “fall apart.” Well, for everyone afraid of retrogrades, I have some bad news for you.  Every planet goes retrograde.  The good news is retrogrades aren’t really a bad thing. Astronomers tell us that all retrograde is a planet appearing to move backward in the sky and this happens due to planets orbiting around the sun at different speeds. Astrologers tell us that when a planet appears to be moving backward the areas of life it rules over are affected.

Venus goes retrograde in the sign of Capricorn on Dec. 19, what does that mean for us?

Venus is the planet of love, beauty and value. Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean your love life will fall apart. During Venus retrograde, we’re forced to take a closer look at these parts of our lives. Just like Venus is moving backward, this is a chance to look back and reassess our love lives and values. Although this may mean you get a text from your ex. Just take some time to look at what you hold dear to you and how it’s serving you. It’s also important to note when it’s said Venus rules over value, that means money too. This is a good time to plan financially for the upcoming year.

While retrogrades aren’t bad, they may be a bad time to do some stuff. Don’t make any major decisions or changes in any area of life Venus rules over. During this time Venus is not keeping things pretty and prosperous like usual. So, when it comes to the beauty aspect do NOT dye your hair or get that funky haircut. Really just avoid any major changes to your appearance. You probably won’t like it by the end of Venus retrograde. Try to avoid entering into a new relationship or taking any big steps with your partner. When it comes to money no big purchases should be made until after the retrograde, which means get your holiday shopping done ASAP.

Since Venus is going retrograde in the sign of Capricorn, to best understand how it’ll affect your life, you need to see where Capricorn is in your birth chart. If you don’t already have your birth chart, you can make one here. Capricorn and Cancer risings will be the most affected as this is happening in their first house of self and seventh house of relationships respectively. People who have a lot of Capricorn placements are also likely to feel the effects more heavily.

Hopefully, you’re no longer dreading this Venus retrograde because we’re going to be in it until January 29. Remember — it’s a really good time to reflect on your life before the new year and get rid of anything that no longer serves you. And now that you know what to expect you can go in ready. You might want to reschedule your appointment to get bangs though.
