Spoiler warning for Project Hail Mary ahead. Reader discretion is advised.

In a time where society is driven by differences between individuals, where flaws are pointed out, and certain groups are judged, Project Hail Mary is a much-needed beacon of light.

Having never read the book and only watched the trailer a few months ago, I went to see this film based on my best friend’s recommendation, and I walked out feeling alive. It’s been a while since I last saw a film that filled me with joy, whether because of the cinematography and invigorating plotline, or the extremely adorable companion, Rocky, who embodies hope like no other character on screen.

Project Hail Mary tells the story of Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher, who gets tangled up on a mission to save Earth because a substance called “astrophage” in the film is slowly killing the sun. Grace is deserted in space with no one to guide him, and wakes up from a coma suffering severe memory loss. He spends the film trying to figure out who he is and how he came about this mission, when he befriends an alien he names Rocky. The two of them overcome their differences and work together, building a lasting connection that forms the main plot of the second half of the film.

From a film standpoint, the movie delivers what you would expect from modern science fiction. The visuals are incredibly impressive, and there are so many shots in the film that I was blown away by. The views of space, and even inside the ship itself, were so well-detailed and designed that it’s hard not to appreciate the set crew. The pacing works well, balancing tense moments with lighter ones so the film never feels too heavy. Ryan Gosling, who plays the protagonist, carries much of the story, moving between humor, fear, and resilience in a way that makes Grace feel real. He helped emphasize that Grace isn’t some super-intelligent hero; he is an ordinary person who also struggles to find his path in life. He is someone we can understand and connect with.

At its core, Project Hail Mary isn’t just a film about space exploration and saving the world; it’s much more. While Grace’s self-discovery is integral to the plot, as I watched this film, I felt more compelled by his relationship with Rocky. The two astronauts are from two entirely different worlds, and yet they meet during a desperate time in their lives. Rocky represents hope to Grace, at least in my interpretation of the film. He gives Grace purpose to continue with the mission, but above all else, he helps to remind Grace that they are not as different as he originally thought.

This is where the film feels especially relevant today. We live in a time where division and prejudice seem more visible than ever. People often react to what they do not understand with fear or judgment. Project Hail Mary presents a different approach. Instead of treating the unknown as something to avoid, it shows the value of trying to understand it. One of my favorite scenes is when Grace decides to record all of Rocky’s sounds and translates them into English and vice versa, helping them communicate. He listens to Rocky talk about his home planet, he asks about his family and his journey, and comes to appreciate the companionship deeply. Watching that shift happen is definitely a highlight in the entire film; it gave the story more weight than the typical “save the world” plot.

The film also challenges the idea of “us versus them.” It shows that trust can grow even in the most unlikely situations. More importantly, it suggests that cooperation is not just ideal, but necessary. Progress, in the film and in real life, often depends on the willingness to listen and adapt. At the end of the day, even if we’re from different backgrounds, we all have the desire to find connections whenever we can. It’s what makes us who we are, and that was really beautiful to see translated onto the big screen.

Project Hail Mary leaves a lasting impression. It is not just a story about some invincible man saving humanity. It is a story about connection, trust, and the choice to understand rather than fear. In a time when the world can feel divided, that message stands out in a way that feels both timely and necessary.

I highly recommend seeing this film at least once in your life. It’s incredibly well made, and I would argue this is Gosling’s finest work in quite some time, and in the words of Rocky himself, Project Hail Mary is simply, “amaze, amaze, amaze!”
