The Event: Kappa Delta’s Shamrock Event is a 5k throughout University of Central Florida’s campus on Sunday April 1st beginning at 8:00 a.m.

The Cause: Prevent Child Abuse America and, locally, the Children’s Home Society of Central Florida

Why you should care: Whether a child experiences emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, or neglect, the effects are serious and long term. An emotionally abused child can have a “lifelong pattern of depression, estrangement, anxiety, low self-esteem, inappropriate or troubled relationships, or a lack of empathy” as well as many other difficulties and struggles in their lifetime, according to Prevent Child Abuse America. Sexually abused children can have trouble forming relationships, engage in self-destructive behavior, have an unusual interest in sex, act out in school, and/or have low self-confidence.  Neglect is also a common form of abuse that affects roughly 1,961,3100 children in America, whether through physical, emotional, or educational neglect.

Prevent Child Abuse America and Children’s Home Society of Central Florida help provide medical help and professional support for children that have experienced abuse. They provide group therapy, clinical therapy and other behavioral techniques to help victims come to term with their emotions and continue their lives in a positive way. They also prevent further abuse by allowing victims to turn their frustration into positive energy instead of taking it out on someone else and by raising awareness so abuse can be recognized and stopped.

If you can’t make the run: There will also be a partial proceeds night at Yogurtopia across from campus on Tuesday March 27th and Wednesday March 28th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Why it is fun: This year is the first year that Shamrock is a competition. The organization on campus with the most participation in the run and at the partial proceeds night will win.
