The University of Central Florida’s softball team has remained dominant this season, with notable wins over No. 10 LSU, No. 17 Georgia, No. 12 Oklahoma State, and, most recently, No. 23 Arizona State. Currently ranked 22nd in the ESPN softball poll, UCF is poised for its sixth consecutive NCAA tournament berth.

In their annual Black & Gold Classic, UCF came out swinging, jumping out to a 5-1 record for the season, with victories over Boston, California State Bakersfield, and Maryland twice. The team fell short against No. 16-ranked Duke.

As the season progressed, UCF continued to make strides in its national standing. The Knights closed out the Shriners Children’s Clearwater Invitational with a 3–2 record, marking the first time the program left Clearwater with a winning record. Their strong wins against Georgia and LSU also propelled them into the national Top 25 poll for the first time this season.

The UCF Knights delivered one of their most impressive performances of the season this past week, taking two of three from the Sun Devils. UCF lost the first game 7-1 and won games 2 and 3, 8-1 and 4-3, showing their ability to adapt quickly, even away from home.

The Knights have debuted many young and talented players this year, with one-third of the roster consisting of freshmen. The high energy these players bring is seen as great potential for UCF softball head coach Cindy Ball-Malone, according to an interview with the Orlando Sentinel.

“We’re still building and growing, and we’re young, and so they have the energy for it,” Ball-Malone said.

The team’s freshmen lineup includes right-hand pitcher Ava Stuewe, who pitched 5.2 innings with an earned run average (how many runs a pitcher gives up) of 0.0 in her debut tournament with the program and became the first recipient of the Big 12’s Freshman of the Week honor.

Isabella Vega, a redshirt sophomore, was the workhorse on the field last year, pitching a total of 135.2 innings, and continues to build momentum into the ‘26 season. Vega received Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week for the first time this season and third time collegiately following a win against ranked LSU, where she maintained a perfect 0.0 earned run average.

Returning junior Sierra Humphrey remains one of the team’s most dominant hitters. Humphrey is leading the team with a .395 batting average, 49 hits, and 11 home runs as of April 14. She became the fourth UCF player to earn a Big 12 weekly honor, receiving Big 12 Player of the Week in Week 9.

The Knights have continued to show progress in the rankings, strengthening their NCAA tournament chances. The NCAA Division I softball tournament selection is scheduled for May 10, and the Knights certainly have a lot of momentum that could propel them into the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma. UCF has continued to prove itself as a serious competitor in the league, and regardless of how this season ends, a roster built largely around talented freshmen and sophomores positions the team to build as a program in years to come.
