Friendsgiving The Gilmore Girls Way

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

It’s that time of year again: Thanksgiving and nothing is better than having your own version of it with your nearest and dearest friends! This tradition is known as Friendsgiving and it is even cooler and hipper than Thanksgiving because you get to spend it with your homies.  The holiday of Thanksgiving is so amazing in itself with its many courses, cheerful memories and much appreciated following food coma. However, Thanksgiving this year comes at an even more special time than ever because the Gilmore Girls revival airs on Netflix less than 24 hours later! It only seems fitting to ring in the grand news by hosting a Friendsgiving with you and your pals that commemorates and praises the traditions brought forth by the quirky and lovable Gilmore Girls themselves. In order to successfully host a Gilmore Girls themed Friendsgiving you will need 1) friends 2) food and 3) a dog that hopefully looks like Paul Anka himself, but if you are short on the Paul Anka don’t fret because that’s more of a decorative item. The basis of hosting a GG themed Friendsgiving is to have each one of your friends bring a different and unique type of dish and I am about to reveal to you how simple and easy it is to get together and celebrate both Thanksgiving and the revival of one of the greatest shows to ever air.

1. Have someone most definitely bring Chinese takeout.

Rory and Lorelai are infamous for ordering Chinese takeout and enjoying each and every last drop. It only seems fitting to celebrate the day by having one of your closest friends bring some form of Chinese over and all digging into beef and broccoli, Mu Goo Gai Pan and some good old fried rice.

2. Breakfast food is necessary… even if it isn’t breakfast time.

Lorelai and Rory ALWAYS make it to Luke’s Diner every morning and know the importance of eating breakfast. Breakfast food is essential for survival and having one of your pals bring over some donuts, pancakes or waffles can only add to the celebration and make it that much more Gilmore-y!

3. COFFEE. COFFEE. COFFEE.

Coffee shouldn’t even have to be on here because any Gilmore Girls fan knows that coffee is the blood life of Rory and Lorelai Gilmore. Wihtout their coffee they are nothing, they are obsolete and without the Gilmore Girls coffee just isn’t as fun. Make sure there is at least a pitcher or so of coffee at this get together in order to rally the troops and keep the atmosphere fun.

4. Mexican Food!!!

The Gilmore Girls are always trying something new at Al’s Pancake World and they have definitely come across Mexican food plenty of times to fully appreciate it! Incuding some tacos, burritos or quesadillas in your friendsgiving plans can only make it that much more successful.

5. Pizza, because why not?

The Gilmore Girls are notorious for trying new food and pizza is something that can never be done wrong. Italian food is cheesy, filling and gourmet: even if it is just a box of Papa John’s Pizza and some cheesy bread. Al’s Pancake World includes food from all across the globe each and every week and pizza will be a nice, normal choice out of the many cuisines that have previously been offered.

6. We all scream for ice cream.

The Gilmore Girls love ice cream and so does everyone else, so ice cream is a must-have for a desert item. Also, what better way is there to end off an amazing night than by polishing off a carton of Ben and Jerry’s? I guarantee if you bring this you’ll be the fan favorite.

In order to successfully host a GG themed Friendsgiving you must have all of these items. It’s just a few easy steps and a few easy takeout orders and voilá… you are ready! Call up some friends, delegate the food orders and plan on a time to all meet up and get Gilmore Girl happy, I promise you won’t be disappointed!
