Fresh Picked Apple: Your Guide to the New iPhone 5’s

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

A new iPhone?! But, I’m still pining after the iPhone 5… and they’re already coming out with something newer and better?! Well, on to the next one! Here’s all the swoon-worthy details on Apple’s latest and greatest! Daydream with me here for a moment as I give you the easy guide to the new iPhones and software!

iPhone 5S

At first glance, it looks very similar to the previous generation but it’s what’s on the inside that counts.

Camera: The image sensor is larger with significantly higher low-light performance. Pretty much, your pictures taken in dim settings (from nights out perhaps?) are about to get even better. Snap a pic with your new iPhone 5S and watch the Instagram likes roll on in.

Features: Say hello to the new fingerprint reader, TouchID! The sensor is under the traditional home button allowing the owner to forego passwords and unlock their phone with just a swipe of their finger. Through TouchID you will also be able to purchase music, apps and videos.

Design: Seems to be pretty much the same as the original iPhone 5 but is offered in a champagne/gold colour. Oh you fancy, huh?

Speed: It has improved processing capabilities, which should double your iPhone’s speed and a noticeable increase of battery life! I’m all about that.

Price: Starting prices for a 16GB is $649 and going up from there and the 64GB hitting $849. Alright, college students, you may have to break open your lifetime of piggy banks for this one.

IPhone 5C

Cheaper and more colorful, here’s the iPhone for the creative!

Camera: The 8-megapixel camera from the previous generation iPhone 5 is included but the front camera has gotten a boost and will provide FaceTime HD quality with enhanced light sensitivity.

Features: Featuring 4-inch retina display is high resolution and pin-sharp. Making photos look good and on-screen text easier to read.

Design: It’s about to get wild! For the first time, the iPhone 5C has a plastic back! The rear shell is available in green, yellow, blue, white and pink. And of course wallpaper to match!

Speed: Equipped with the same processor as the previous generation iPhone 5, it should run at about the same speed but with more battery life!

Price: Starting price announced for the 16GB iPhone 5C is $549 and topping the 32GB at $649.

iOS 7

The new iPhone 5S & 5C will come equipped with the new iOS 7 software but it will be available to all iPhones and iPads starting September 18th!

Design: A total new look and feel! Cleaner design elements, more white space and brighter colors. Those who fear change, don’t fret! It will still have the same functions and a similar layout.

Camera: You can apply filters right in your photo app! Just like a built-in Instagram without the photo-sharing. As well as the new sharing option called AirDrop which will allow you to share photos wirelessly. As well as new options for organization.

Features:

  • Control Center – A new set of easy to access controls. You can easily reach and adjust your settings, control your music and use the new built-in flashlight.

  • Multitasking – You can switch back and forth between apps by tapping the home button, as before, but this time you can see what’s happening in your app.

  • Siri – Say hello to the older, wiser and male (if you choose) Siri! He or she will be faster at answering questions that he or she can now reach from Bing, Wikipedia or Twitter.
