Fashion Forecast: Fall 2013 Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

As all you fashion gurus out there know, New York Fashion Week came to an end yesterday. Those involved, whether they were designers, models or PR people, can finally get some sleep again. All that remains of the crazy week are the fabulous Fall 2013 trends designers so kindly shared with the world.

Chances are, if you’re reading this, you didn’t get to see the latest collections of the likes of Rebecca Minkoff, Nanette Lepore, Kenneth Cole and so many more, live on the runways. Don’t worry, though, here’s a cheat sheet of fall trends to look out for!

Houndstooth

Fall, for most places in the United States, is a time when coats are starting to be worn, right before the winter season kicks in. Houndstooth is one trend you can look out for in these cooler seasons. Whether the pattern is on a coat, skirt or maybe even a shoe, it’s bound to be seen on fashionistas everywhere. Michael Kors and Tommy Hilfiger had a more classic, preppy twist on this upcoming trend compared to Thom Browne, whose silhouettes were very exaggerated and a bit more feminine.

Metallic

This is a trend that is already catching on off the runway as metallic accented sandals can be found at Forever 21. While metallic accented shoes are definitely chic, a fully metallic shoe is uniquely chic. This Fall 2013 trend was seen on the runway at Nanette Lepore’s show—metallic shoes, handbags or belts were seen on almost every model wearing the collection. On Diane Von Furstenberg’s runway, models could be seen wearing metallic print pants and jumpsuits. This trend will add a pop of individuality to any outfit.

Leather

Fall colors have always tended to be darker compared to those of spring. This fall, deep jewel tones are in the midst, especially in leather fabric. Black leather is always a staple in any fall wardrobe, but be sure to add some plum or hunter green leather into the mix. Charlotte Ronson‘s models were seen sporting green leather pants on the runway, fitted leather dresses were seen on Michael Kor’s runway and Kenneth Cole had burgundy leather pants in his collection.

Keyhole Necklines

Deep V necklines were seen all over the runway and a particularly popular twist, especially in Diane von Furstenberg’s collection, is the keyhole neckline. It’s a way to show off some skin in longer dresses while still keeping it classy. This trend could also be seen in Jill Stuart’s fall collection.

Mixed Fabrics

Sometimes it seems a little daring to mix patterns in outfits, but something even more daring is the mixing of fabrics. This appeared in many collections on this year’s runways from Rebecca Minkoff to Jason Wu, designers took the risk and made it magnificent. Rebecca Minkoff mixed tweed with leather in her jackets. Other designers were very bold in their mixture of fabrics going as far as mixing velvet and satin. Goodbye, color blocking; hello, mixed fabrics.

Be sure to stay on the lookout for these fashion trends this coming fall; they’ll be sure to make an appearance!
