5 Things I’ve Learned From Being a Professional Princess

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

I’ve had my fair share of part-time jobs, but the most memorable and rewarding has been my time as a princess performer. I get hired to perform as various princesses, superheroes and other storybook characters at birthday parties, charity events, and more. While part of the job is wearing beautiful dresses and a face full of makeup, a lot of hard work goes into making magic for the guests, whether they’re six or 60 years old.

Patience

While not every gig is a children’s event, most of them are. If you’ve ever worked with kids, you know the experience can be overwhelming. They have endless amounts of energy and can be overcome with excitement when they see a sequined ball gown and glittering tiara. You could easily be asked the same question 20 times while also being pulled in five different directions for photos. Connecting with kids is definitely a learned skill, but also a hugely fun part of the job.

Character

Most of the time, the audience you’re performing for includes kids who believe you actually are their favorite fairytale character, so you want to keep the magic alive for them. They don’t need to know that you were lacing up your corset and chugging a large coffee in your car five minutes ago. If a child asks “How long was the drive here?” it’s only right to remind them that your kingdom is far, far away and the royal carriage dropped you off!

Quick Thinking

Like I mentioned before, kids’ imaginations can run absolutely wild. They come up with some seriously unexpected questions and expect a serious answer. Being able to respond to odd questions while keeping a smile on your face is not a skill that comes easily. While having performing experience definitely helps, no improv class could’ve prepared me for being asked “Belle, do you wear underwear?”

Creativity

No two princessing shifts are the same and each party has its own challenges. At one party, the birthday girl was a little overwhelmed to have Cinderella at her house and didn’t want to participate in the usual sing-alongs and face painting. So, we decided to spend the hour making bead jewelry. While this may have been an unconventional shift, it made for some sweet memories (and an adorable souvenir).

Gratitude

Under all the sequins and makeup, princess performing is about creating meaningful experiences for the people you meet. Each interaction is unique and memorable in its own way. You truly never know what a hug or a smile could mean to someone, especially if it’s coming from their childhood hero.

I truly never imagined the impact a part-time job could have on me, but I’m so glad that I get to experience the magic of it with each and every photo, hug and smile.
