5 Simple and Quick Halloween Costumes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

Picture this: It’s 6 p.m. on Wednesday and you get a text from a friend that there’s a party happening tonight and you need to be ready in an hour. You say yes immediately, but then remember you have no costume to wear! Whether you’re going to a costume party, going out on the town or just having a Halloween movie night with friends, sometimes you need a costume that you can quickly throw together. Luckily, this article has you covered! Here are five easy DIY Halloween costumes you most likely already have in your closet or can be made with pieces that you can pick up at the store for cheap.

1. Mario Chic

A chic twist on the classic outfit worn by the Nintendo king himself, Mario. This costume is extremely simple and doesn’t require any complex makeup. All you need is a red shirt, overalls or an overall dress, black shoes and a red hat—but don’t forget Mario’s signature logo! You can find it online and tape it to your hat. Not a fan of bright red? Go with a maroon for an edgier look. Just make sure you’re prepared for all the pictures people will want to take with you!

2. The Gothic Wednesday Adams

You don’t need a white-collar shirt to go as Wednesday Adams. In fact, you don’t even need a dress. You can be a little more unconventional with it. I wore a black romper with a white crop top underneath (in place of a collared shirt) and a black cardigan over it to cover the white sleeves. Paired with black ballet flats and braided pigtails, this outfit will have you looking like a goth queen. The makeup is simple as well. As you can see, black is your best friend when it comes to this look. Also, the darker the makeup the better!

3. Not-So-Scary Scarecrow

This costume is easy and adorable. All you need is a flannel, blue jeans and boots. Having a floppy hat is a plus but if not, putting your hair in pigtails works too. The makeup for this is a little more complex. You will be accentuating all your facial features such as your mouth and nose with a stitched outline and adding bright circles to your cheeks. The eye makeup should be natural; after all, you are a scarecrow.

4. Oh Deer!

This is my all-time favorite DIY costume. All you need is a brown or burnt orange dress, or even a brown shirt and black pants. Get yourself a pair of antlers at Target or Spirit Halloween, or DIY some with a headband and paper cutouts and your outfit is complete. Now, the makeup is a little more difficult for this one. But luckily, Pinterest has you covered on the makeup inspiration. Plenty of YouTubers have tutorials too!

5. Wannabe Influencer

Many of you may have heard about the controversial Urban Outfitters influencer Halloween Costume, but rather than shelling out $60, check your closet first. All you really need is a sports bra, jacket or knit cardigan and leggings. The best part about this costume is the fact that you don’t have to do anything fancy with your hair or makeup because you can wear a dad hat and sunglasses to complete the costume. Super simple and trendy! People may not get it, but those who obsess over YouTube and Instagram surely will.

Have a happy and spooky Halloween!
