22 Songs That Sound Like Your High School Break Up

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

These songs are a poignant reminder of that terrible relationship where you thought you were in love with your brace-faced, quarterback high school boyfriend. Whether the relationship ended when you left for college, because he cheated on prom night, or even if you’re still friends with your teenage lover, one of these songs is bound to hit home.

1. Fifteen by Taylor Swift

“Wish you could go back and tell yourself what you know now.”

I literally thought this song was my entire life.

2. Complicated by Avril Lavigne

“You promised me I’m never gonna find you fake it.”

Avril Lavigne put into words the emotions of every sad teenage girl.

3. Leave, Get Out by JoJo

“You said that you would treat me right by you was just a waste of time.”

Girl power, for real.

4. F**k It by Eamon

“See, I don’t know why I liked you so much, I gave you all of my trust”

If this was your go-to break up song, there’s no way things ended well. But remember the rebuttal version by Frankee?

5. What Went Wrong by Blink 182

“I’m sick of always hearing sappy love songs on the radio.”

Tell me I’m not the only one who still shouts these lyrics in my car

6. Burn by Usher

*Sobs uncontrollably while screaming LET IT BURN*

“Does he watch your favorite movies? Does he hold you when you cry?”

It’s about to get real emo up in here.

For some reason, Willie Nelson’s version tugs at my heartstrings.

9. Lonely by Akon

“Can’t believe I had a girl like you and I just let you walk right outta my life.”

Talk about #sadboyproblems

Is it possible to listen to a Bon Iver song without crying?

This one kind of just goes without saying…

Someone bring out a pint of Ben & Jerry’s and ‘The Notebook,” it’s about to get emotional.

14. Rain On Me by Ashanti

We should all aspire to be more like Ashanti.

15. That Should Be Me by Justin Bieber

90’s J. Lo was every thing.

I had to add another Usher song, it just wasn’t an option.

“And I’m all mixed up, feeling cornered and rushed.”

This song only has like 5 different lyrics, but that doesn’t make it any less emotional.

Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow. What could be better for your breakup tears?

22. My Immortal by Evanescence
