11 Unrealistic Life Expectations You Had From Watching Gilmore Girls

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

I loved watching this show growing up, it’s the main reason used to beg my mom to let me drink coffee as a kid. Which she always said no to since she wasn’t a “cool mom” like Lorelai. But you get older and realize that life will never be that easy, but those expectations are still there because Rory and Lorelai made the way they live so awesome and real!

The far from realistic life expectations we develop as GG fans:

1. Feeling cheated when conversations are not witty, efficient and bursting with cultural references.

Witty banter is a rare gem. Appreciate those who have the ability.

2. Seeing coffee as a magical elixir that allows you to have time to read entire books while slaying in school (and do just about everything else).

Coffee is amazing, but you are probably never going to have time to read entire novels right now. And that’s okay.

3. When the smart, cynical man of your dreams, does not work at your local diner/coffee shop, pouring you coffee and wisdom daily.

Good luck trying this at Starbucks.

4. Thinking if you unsuspectingly had a kid young, it would be so fun and filled with adventures and junk food.

Umm, no. Never.

5. Wishing your mom would just be cool already and treat you like her best friend.

Not practical. I’m thankful my mom gave me limits and lots of vegetables.

6. Trying to label the girls in your friend group.

No, you are not a Rory, and I’m not a Paris Geller. Not everybody fits into a neat character box.

7.  Thinking you can verbally spar with unsuspecting people, and just pour out every thought you have swirling around your head.

Best to save that for best friend time. Not everyone is a fan.

8. Thinking that everyone will eventually enjoy your brand of crazy.

Give people the option to run. Be yourself, but learn that you can’t win everyone over.

9. Forming deep female bonds where borrow each other’s cars and are super involved in their lives.

Female bonding is beautiful and sacred, but don’t force it or expect it all the time. Don’t “Lorelai” your way into a friendship.

10. Ridiculous dating expectations.

Reality is so much more better than fiction. As an adult, you appreciate the awkward and unrehearsed intimate convo. Cliche guys will most likely never blow your mind.

11. Being under the impression that it would be easy to be financially independent and be your own person.

It’s the main reason Lorelai is so amazing. She worked so hard to be self-sufficent and made it look so easy. In reality though, it’s hard and takes a lot more than gallons of coffee. Though that does help.

But her desire to create and explore is often overcomed by her need for hot tea, naps and Netflix marathons.
