The World’s Real Heroes: Our Moms

There is no one in the entire world that I look up to more than my mom. She gave birth to me, raised me, and has always been there for me. Even when I make bad decisions and regret them very much, she is there to help me learn from them. She is someone I will always admire. Mothers are people who we take for granted. They are constantly in our lives, which makes it easier for us to sometimes not appreciate everything they do. Everything they do is always for us. Mothers go through a lot in their lives to take care of their children and raise them to be the best versions of themselves that they can be. It is not something moms take lightly, because it is a serious job.

The more I think about it, the crazier it is that my mom raised two daughters that grew up to be successful. One of us is currently at UC Davis, and the other is working full time at a great company job. Having one child running around is one thing, but having another baby to take care of while the other child is running around is a whole other thing in itself. I don’t know how she did it, but I am so grateful that she did. I think it is important to remember, as daughters and sons, that our moms went through so many life experiences while raising us. Although we like to put our parents on pedestals and think that they aren’t humans, and are just our ‘parents’, parents are just people too. Our moms were just like us when they were our age. They were going to Fraternity parties, studying for midterms, trying to find jobs, and wondering when they’d meet the right guy to date. We only have been able to see them as “Mom” for the past 20ish years.

Yet, this is what makes mothers so special. They were regular people, but when they had us everything changed. They became “Mom”, and that is one of the most amazing things about having children. We admire our mothers for all of the unique things in their lives they have done to be our moms today, and the unique upbringings they have given us. Although my mom may get on my back about studying more or about staying out too late, I will always think of her as my biggest hero. She is the number one person who has influenced me to become the individual I am today. This Mother’s Day, be sure to call your Mom, send her a card, or visit her in person. No matter how close you are with her, just do it. You only get one mom, and she has done more than you will ever know or understand as your parent.

Thank you to all the mothers out there, you are the world’s heroes because you make the largest difference in people’s lives.
