Things People Say to Vegetarians

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

I’ve been a vegetarian for three years, and I’m constantly meeting people who are confused, intrigued, or shocked that I decided to stop eating meat. I’ve never been able to understand how my decision to stop eating meat affects them, but I’ve met a few people who are convinced they’ll be the ones to get me to start eating meat again. There are several common phrases that I’ve heard.

1. Why are you vegetarian?

To be clear, I don’t mind this question at all. If someone is curious, I’ll tell them. My issue is with people who ask me as if vegetarianism is some kind of disease I’ve brought upon myself. It’s really not that bad.

2. Don’t you miss the taste of meat?

No, I don’t. If I did, I would probably start eating it again.

3. What do you eat at restaurants?

Many people assume that my only options are salads, but a lot of restaurants are actually very accommodating for vegetarians. Most places I’ve been to are more than willing to not put meat on whatever dish I order.

4. Try this piece of meat, trust me.

I respect your decision to eat meat, so please respect my decision to not. Being offered meat makes me feel like my decision to be vegetarian is not taken seriously.

Whether your diet is vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, or you enjoy eating meat, it’s important to respect everyone’s dietary habits.
