From Shining, Single Girl to Glamorous Girlfriend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

We all want what we can’t have.  Any single girl is said to want to be in a relationship.  But is that what you really want?  Do you really want to be part of a couple?

Yes.  You want to be in a relationship, but you don’t know how.

Who wouldn’t want to have someone to snuggle with at night, to make you laugh, and to listen to the events of your day?  It sounds pretty great.  But, you haven’t been in a relationship in such a long time, or ever.  How are you supposed to know how to get to this point when you’re so used to being single?

You obviously know how to flirt, pretty well, might I add.  You don’t, however, know how to make the flirting more than a fling.

How do you let go of your social, single ways to be tied down in a relationship?

Admit it, it’s fun to go out and flirt with different boys!  Even if you’re not interested, which usually you’re not, the rush you get from a little attention is a short-lived, yet thrilling high.  You don’t know how you’re going to give that up to be with one boy.

You know that you should consider being in a relationship with a guy if you get that middle-school feeling inside.  The butterflies will not stop fluttering in your stomach, you can’t stop smiling, and you can’t stop the word vomit of constantly talking about how cute he is.  If this is your current status, you should think about changing your relationship status.

Although you may no longer get the short-lived high off of the constant flirtation from random boys, you will have something much more lasting and reliable; you will have one boy that you can flirt with that you know will flirt back.  This flirting is different than the kind previously mentioned, it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy and lasts infinitely longer than the short-lived high.

Nike… Just do it!

It’s hard to change after living your life one way for so long, but change is exciting!  Don’t shy away from a relationship just because you’re afraid, you could miss out on such an amazing experience.  Like I’ve stated in previous articles, rejection is worse than regret.  In this case, there is no rejection, at least not on your end.  In conclusion, you have nothing to lose except your single status.  Giving up your single title isn’t just a loss, remember that you are gaining things that you never had before.

No.  You’re not ready to settle down anytime soon.

There is nothing wrong with being single, despite what movies like to tell us.  It’s nice not having anyone to answer to.  You are a free agent; able to go wherever you want, whenever you want, with whomever you want.

Everyone always thinks the grass is always greener.  When you’re single, you’re able to move on to the “greener pastures” at the drop of a hat!  You’re not locked down into anything serious.  The world is at your fingertips, whether that’s having a girl’s night or going out and catching yourself a fish only to throw it back in the ocean.  (I hope the metaphors are helping.)

Never let anybody pressure you into being in a relationship or feeling as though you need to be in one.  Let me repeat: there is nothing wrong with being single!  Enjoy your single life.  Take advantage of the things that you can do that you wouldn’t be able to do if you were in a relationship.

However, take caution not to let the single life get to you.  Make sure you don’t throw away a potential relationship because you are caught up in your single status.  Someone can come along that will make you feel like the first half of this article when you least expect it.

No expectations.  Do not decide what you want your relationship status to be.  Enjoy your status everyday.  There are positives to both single and couple life.  The grass is never greener.  Wishing you were in a different place in your life is a waste of time and energy.  Enjoy where you are as much as you can.  As cliché as it is, you only live once, so live it up!
