Growing up, I was a frequent visitor to my local library. Located within walking distance of my school, the library was the perfect spot for me to wait for my parents to pick me up after they got off work. Whether I was thumbing through a chapter book, perusing the latest edition of “American Girl” magazine or scouring the shelves for my next read, the library gave me the resources I needed to combat boredom and fuel my passion for reading.Â
As I got older, I stopped relying on the library as a haven. Since earning my driver’s license, I no longer needed to wait at the library for a ride home. Furthermore, after receiving a Kindle as a birthday gift, I was hardly starved for reading material. With that, the library became an occasional study spot and little more.Â
Though I largely wrote off libraries as a relic of my childhood, I recently came across an advertisement that completely shifted my perception of these establishments. It came as a Facebook post promoting a wrestling match held in the library lobby. This sparked my curiosity, and I clicked on the video attachment to find that the library did indeed host a wrestling match complete with a ring, referee and several professional wrestlers outfitted in flashy costumes. Naturally, this got me thinking: what other programs does the library provide access to? After doing a little research, I discovered several compelling resources offered by libraries. The best part: they are all completely free to use!
If you’re anything like me and appreciate the convenience of eBooks, then you might want to look into “Libby.” “Libby” is a free-to-download app that provides users access to millions of eBooks, audiobooks and magazines. After inputting your library card information, you have the ability to “borrow” from the vast selection of books. For example, you could check out anything from that trending romantasy book to the classic novel you’ve been meaning to read for months. “Libby” has you covered.Â
Beyond books, libraries also house a repertoire of items that can be loaned upon request. The “library of things” offered by public libraries allows cardholders to check out gardening tools, camping supplies, cameras, sewing machines, board games and so much more. Additionally, with a library card, you can borrow passes to visit locations such as state parks and museums. Whether you’re looking to pick up a new hobby or plan an excursion, local libraries will loan you the materials you need to make these dreams a reality.
Looking for a free activity to participate in this weekend? Check the event calendar for your local library! Libraries often sponsor programs, including craft workshops, movie nights and yoga classes. Not only is this a great way to participate in fun experiences, but it will also allow you to engage with other members of your community.Â
Signing up for a library card not only permits you access to a slew of complimentary resources but also promotes the continued funding of these programs. Demonstrating a demand for services offered by libraries motivates local and state governments to continue their contributions. Consider signing up for a library card today!
