The Power of California: the 5th Largest Economy in the World

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

Ah yes! The great golden state that is California. California, for most people, is a state that embodies both glamour and sunny beaches. With California’s growing industries, such as construction, continuing to flourish, the state alone is a powerhouse.

The state of California, according to The Hill, is the fifth largest economy in the world as of May 2018. The state alone, according to the BBC, is a state that “shaped the world.” Economically, the state surpassed the United Kingdom, along with the United States, China, Japan, and Germany. What made this state great is due to three influential and large industries: Silicon Valley, the Central Valley, and Hollywood.

What’s amazing about California being a large economy is the fact that the state only holds 40 million people. It is worth noting that the UK holds about 66 million people. While California holds polarizing politics, no one can deny the fact that the state contributed 16% of total job growth between 2012 and 2017 when it only holds 12% of the population according to Fortune.

California, as a whole, is not perfect, but one can’t deny that the state helped and is still helping to push the U.S. economy and its influential ability to move the entire world on a cultural level to where it is today.
