On Sunday, April 22, Davis saw a gathering of students at Central Park who have found the strength to fight through their hangovers in order to see to the success of another annual Post Picnic Day Clean-Up.
For the past few years, the UCD Greek Life office has hosted this Post Picnic Day Clean-Up event as a way of restoring the Davis community after a day’s worth of hard partying and playing. However, this year, the NPHC (National Pan-Hellenic Council) is hosting the event.
Founded in 1930, the NPHC is an organization typically comprised of nine greek fraternities and sororities. UC Davis hosts three: the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority. “As members of the NPHC, we uphold the common principles of community building, philanthropic service, and scholarship that are present in all nine greek organizations,” said Kevin Grant, the NPHC public relations chair here in Davis. “We are very excited to host such an event that will help unit the UCD greek community but yet, and more importantly, help the city of Davis,” says Kevin.
The NPHC not only hopes to promote these principles by bonding the Davis Greek community together in the principle of community service, but also aims to help a non-profit student run group on campus called Bottles for Poverty. Bottles for Poverty raises money by collecting recyclables, using this money to support the construction of schools in Gondar, Ethiopia.
To give all chapters more incentive to collect trash, the NPHC gave out Woodstock’s gift cards to the chapters who brought in the most trash.
“Again, we are very excited to host such a great event,” reiterated Grant.
