I don’t know about you guys, but with the start of each new year, I always look forward to all of the crazy, iconic moments in popular culture that will happen. To get us in the spirit, I’ve rounded up some throwback facts from a decade ago, 2006.

1. Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie (celebrity BFFs and the ultimate Hollywood socialites) both managed to get arrested for DUIs (so not hot).

2. Steve Irwin, the famous crocodile hunter, died after being stung by a stingray while filming one of his shows.

3. Britney Spears dropped a bombshell on backup-dancer-turned-hubby Kevin Federline, filing for divorce just two months after their second son was born.

A Big Year for Television

 

1. Friday Night Lights, Ugly Betty, Dexter, 30 Rock, and The Hills all premiered in 2006. Each became very successful and attracted large fan bases.

2. American Idol continued to dominate the ratings through 2006, with Taylor Hicks taking the coveted prize. However, that season also launched the careers of Kellie Pickler and Chris Daughtry, who both actually became more successful than Taylor was.

3. High School Musical premiered in the beginning of 2006 and went on to become the fastest-selling television movie of all time, with 1.2 million DVD copies sold in the first week.
