My Three Favorite Things from Downton Abbey

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

If you’re secretly an eighty-year-old grandmother trapped in a college girl’s body like me, then you know the BBC show Downton Abbey aired its final episode in the United States last Sunday. And, like me, you’ll be simultaneously devastated and in awe that this amazing show has reached its beautiful, beautiful conclusion.

Here are the three things I will miss the most from the show:

1. The costumes

Seriously, Downton Abbey has some of the highest quality period drama costumes. The designs are incredible, the fashions change as the years go by in the show, and the fact that the characters have to change into new clothes just to eat dinner gives the wardrobe department that many more scenes to show the dresses off.

2. Dame Maggie Smith’s insanely sassy dialogue

Dowager Countess Violet Crawley has to be one of the most fun roles Maggie Smith has ever played. Granny always has a zinger in her back pocket, and she isn’t afraid to tell it like it is.

3. Edith and Mary’s incredibly complicated relationship

This is probably the most interesting part of the show because it develops and changes throughout the entire six seasons. Mary, the unpredictable, perfectionist, short-tempered eldest child, constantly berates Edith, the sweet, reserved middle child who craves independence. Edith rarely achieves any sort of victory over her sister, but the showdown in season six is absolutely legendary.

This show will forever be one of my favorite series. I’m so sad that there will never be another Sunday night, waiting for the newest episode with my cup of tea, but the finale was everything I could have asked for. Thank goodness for reruns!
