Making Life a Little Sweeter: What Baking Has Taught Me

During another late night studying, the craving for a sweet treat took over and I decided to partake in something enjoyed by many that I rarely (read: never) do. Cracking open Pinterest, I had laid my eyes upon a simple cookie recipe and a new hobby had been formed. The activity that had once been shoved into my mental junk drawer was withdrawn and through my ventures, it dawned on me the ways that baking has operated beyond the kitchen.

#1: Having patience 

I have never been more focused than when baking a croissant. Meticulous and demanding, the pastry forces one to adhere to lengthy instructions and particular procedures. The payoff makes it all worth it in the end when I am able to tear off the warm and inviting end and indulge in something that I know I took time to put together. I’ve come to realize that the most rewarding of things, whether it be university or personal projects, feel all the more fulfilling when I recall the time and dedication I applied and the connection I have to the work I’ve done. Just like a croissant, the best things are those that make me slow down and tune in. 

#2: Learning to let go 

My irritation definitely peaks when making naughty brownies. Don’t let the simplicity fool you, as I can confirm my rage when the cookie batter sticks to the bottom of the baking pan or when the Oreo under the top brownie layer fractures away. Regardless of the final product, I’m still rather pleased with the taste and can still share it with friends and family, laughing about my defeat against a three-step recipe. Perfect is an impossible standard and while my missteps in the kitchen can be annoying in the moment, I am able to reflect that not everything can go as planned. Releasing the pressure, I can appreciate life in all its versions.

#3: Taking time for myself 

Baking is a time commitment, no matter how long or short the recipe. The gathering of supplies, construction and cleaning had been, above all else, the most unappealing aspect — what had previously steered me clear. Yet giving time to myself, daunting as it had sounded, was, in actuality, the best lesson learned through this pastime. I’ve found through slipping into the world of baking that carving time out for myself amidst a taxing schedule has not only allowed me to be able to take things in but also to really appreciate what surrounds me.  

Any time spent near an oven had previously seemed impossible to me. As a busy university student, balancing responsibilities and other undertakings, I certainly have gotten caught up in the demands of life. With classes, studying, clubs, and work, it felt unreasonable to be expected to conjure up a meal other than a prepackaged bite or a quick order from one of my favorite spots. Baking, though, has not only been a great addition for my sweet tooth but also something I have carried from it into my day-to-day.
